All the older guys I hunt with always say you can’t work deer with calls around here. I’d like to prove them wrong. What are y’all go to calls? I’ve got a grunt and doe can, I’ve never tried the snort wheeze. What say the OB?

Ive grunted a bunch of bucks in before. Just have to find one that hears it and is interested. Mostly younger bucks though.

I’ve never had luck calling deer.

I have had luck pissing off the stand and turning around and having a deer look at me

I've grunted in a few. Took a nice video of one on last trip. Others ignore it. Some haul arse. The positive responses I've gotten have all been pre-rut.

Calling really only works when you have older bucks in the herd. If you have a lot of 2.5-3.5 year old bucks then calling is unlikely to work (hence the old folk never having luck with it). That doesn't mean you'll call in older bucks though. Older bucks are more likely to be vocal during breeding times.

I am not a fan of blind calling but I have had luck grunting at bucks once I have eyes on them

ETA: I have grunted in and killed bucks in IL and OK. I have called in bucks but never killed in MS (always very young ones)

Well, that’s pretty much what I do. I’ll scout after a morning hunt. Can’t see too much sign due to everything being under water. If I see some runs I’ll stick to that area a while. The rut aughta be kicking off in the next week or 2. I’d like to see if I can work a buck or 2

It's all about being in the right place at the right time. Some respond some don't.

I used a scented drag along and bleet call. I had young deer such as spikes and button bucks respond basically walk right under my tree. Once I had been using a bleet call most of the morning and had a yearling running to me. So I would say it works on young deer. All of these situations were on highly pressured public land. Just make sure you can see in every direction.

A tight buck to doe ratio and a good percentage of mature bucks makes a difference.
I’ve rattled up some mature Kansas bucks. Killed a 150” like that.
I was sitting on the ground in Mississippi, watching an oak flat. I rattled all along that morning and finally saw a good buck 200 yards out. He was smelling where a doe had been. I snort-wheezed him and he came on a run like a pack of walkers was behind him. I shot him at 40 yards when he pulled up. Mature 8 pt.
I was near a cutover in Mississippi during the rut and rattled on the ground. Three bucks, 2-3 years old came in. They went back and forth in a semi circle. When they would start to loose interest, I’d snort-wheeze them and the hair would stand up on them.
I used to hunt hardwood hills. I’d get on the edge of old cut overs and sit on the ground during mid day. I knew I couldn’t get in quite, so I would jog in, using two grunt calls as I went to sound like two different bucks. I’d sit down quickly and get ready. I never saw a shooter that way, but did call several bucks out of cover right after I sat down.
The key is to have an open area on the downwind side so they can’t circle downwind without being seen. I like rattling from the ground and breaking limbs, etc. A mature buck fight is very loud. Don’t be shy if you are trying to kill a mature buck.

The responses in this thread make me think calling is not as effective in the LA region. It is the best way to hunt in the pre rut in the Midwest and the same goes for Texas to a lesser degree. I can image it’s not quite as effective against thick woods and swamp bucks though.

If you snort-weeze at a deer down here, he just might stop running after 3 days

The one that runs from the snort-wheeze isn’t the one I want to kill.

ive never had luck with grunt calls except for stopping bucks or redirecting them...never pulled one in.

estrous bleat/can ive had a LOT of success pulling in small bucks. my largest 10 pt came straight to them estrous can.

its been so successful i probably over use it now

i'll second this.

90% of the larger bucks (3.5yr olds) i've seen have all been chasing or tending does. i've NEVER seen a mature buck feeding...like, not one time in my life.

I always grunt pre rut til post rut. Hwve had some luck, not always though. It def doesnt hurt. Ive had young bucks and does come in and ill get the grunt out to play with them. They either come closer to investigate, or ignore it. Doesnt hurt
