Very well could be, like I said, I wasn't sure and didn't go do my due diligence to research it.
I've been looking for a good deal on a 686 for a couple of years and ran across that one instead.
I'm still on the lookout for a 686 but it has slid down the depth chart a little bit.

too expensive to buy one today
I couldn't justify it either...hard to beat the 686 or the GP100, and I'm not too much of a wheel gun guy.

Forgot about the Ruger GP100...
And if you prefer carry-sized, the Ruger SP101 and Ruger KLCR are pretty sweet, but very different.

I remember when I bought a python for less than $500. Sold it before I moved to AK (couldn't carry handguns through Canada..)

I've got a model 28-2. Looks just like it but not stainless. Love shooting it.

Yeah, I'd be known as "Pythontiger" now instead of QT.

I wouldn't imagine it's very fun. But I'd rather be on that end than the receiving end.

Another vote for the ruger gp100, which is what I own, but s&w 686 just as good. Was at cableas today and they had a used colt python for $1699. Wanted it oh so bad

There is only one best:
Of course, a Python might not be appropriate for your situation. But it is the King of .357s.
ETA: Fellow Colt purists will of course note that the above gun has an owner installed colored insert in the front sight.

I have a GP100 and wouldn't change a thing about the purchase.

I honestly never knew about the Colt and it's being so pricey. Serious question, what makes it so much more expensive and/or better?

My FIL traded an 8in Python for a s&w performance center 327 (look it up its a bad arse 8 shot .357), a stainless s&w 629, and a little over a $1k
Pythons are as high as giraffe hooch.

4 letters.

Oh okay. I just can't see what all can go wrong with a revolver in terms of dependability so that makes sense.

Several things set the Python apart, including:
- Hand honed action at the factory (the first Pythons were actually only built by 1-2 Colt employees)
- Royal Blue finish created by an ultra fine polish job by Master polishers
- Tapered bore
- Colt's famous DA action that locks the cylinder in perfect alignment with the bore with zero movement
Basically, the Python was a factory built custom revolver, the likes of which will never be seen again.

That, and they just don't make them anymore. Demand makes used pythons sky high.
It's as fine a piece as you will fine that was mass produced, and one of the better looking as well.

It's widely considered the best production DA revolver ever made.

Dang, makes me want to go stroke my 8". Guess I should clean the scope too.
