The cylinder release sucks

Not if you are a Colt enthusiast.

My experience is that you get used to whatever you mainly shoot, and the other brands start to feel 'weird' to you.

They're both 8-shot - the snubby is the CQB version. The other has a longer bbl length.

Both are S&W Performance Center Model 627.

My garrison commander actually owns a snubby version - one thing I can say about the S&W PC revolvers - they exude class and craftsmanship from every pore. The single action trigger break is about as good as an excellent rifle trigger.

However, even the snubby is heavy as all get out.

I'm a huge python fan. I just fumble with the cylinder release.

I've shot some not very old smiths that were fricked up. Smith seems to have spotty quality control on some o their stuff.

Colt Python is the correct answer if the question is "best".

As far as the rest, well........lot of opinion and just a little fact. The only fact I know is that if you are comparing the S&W with the Ruger it has to be said that the Smith is, structurally, a lesser animal. That being said, the average guy will probably never shoot enough to have a problem.

By the way, sweet info about the GP100. I didn't realize it was more robust than a 686.

I think the first 357 I own will be a Coonan, just because no one else has one.

I don't know if it's a quality control issue as much as they are just "light weight" for magnum wheel guns. I had a 629. Never had a problem. Only gun I have ever gotten rid of. Traded for a Colt rail gun and regret it everyday. Not that I don't love the Colt, but I had the money to buy it without the trade.

A GP100 will handle a higher round count of maxed out barn burner .357 than any smith, but if you don't shoot stout loads you'll never have a problem with either.

You pay for it in weight though. The GP is a big heavy bastard.

The smith 629 classic is a better looking gun than the python IMO.

One of the ragged out smiths I've shot was a .38

Not sure how old it was. It was from the 70s if I had to guess.

Infidel and Downshift...

How robust are SP101s? My buddy got one recently and it's really fun to shoot. But I wonder if it'll hold up as well as the GP100. The forcing cone on it looks pretty beefed up, along with the barrel.

The SP101 is a tank also.

It's not as stout as the GP100, but its still very solid and I doubt you can shoot it out.

The forcing cone, top strap, and a few other parts on the SP are the same thickness as a smith 686

Eta: compared to other small frame revolvers it is indestructible.

Ruger has their shite together with their steel.

Seen a lot of wheel guns thrown out of timing, but surprisingly few smiths. I am of the opinion that most are victims of people flipping cylinders shut rather then being "shot" out of time, but that is mostly opinion on my part. I have heard of them having problems with cracked frames.

Almost all Rugers are tanks.

That stainless .357 BH is heavy as an anchor and way overbuilt for the caliber. Of course, it also means it is ridiculously strong.

I really can't give you an educated response so I'll punt to downshift.

What I do know is that Ruger has a GREAT reputation in the wheel gun world for being robust take no shite pieces.

Everytime I see some idiot at the range flip his revolver cylinder back in, I cringe.

Good point. I doubt any of the screwed up ones I've seen were shot out. I'm sure it was irresponsible ownership.
