Have anyone ever owned a Belgian Malinois? Considering getting one but would like to hear about some owners' experiences. Thanks

A friend of mine has worked with them, alot.

He's on the Sheriff's department and was over the k-9 unit for a while.
He's told me that they are very good dogs but like it was said, very high drive.
The bad side of having a high drive is that they can be nippy, meaning you or someone in your family will be bit by one at some point if you decide to get one.

I have a GSD. Wanted a malligator but I knew I couldn't handle it. It is not a good first or second dog to own. Maybe a 3rd or 4th. They have such a high drive and pretty much always require stimulation. If you can devote serious training time and keep up with the level of activity, go for it. They get bored fast without stimulation and you will come home to shredded furniture if you cannot put in the time. What I am saying is a generalization for sure but this is MOST of them.

I'm a big proponent of getting a dog that was bred to do what you plan to do with it.

I had a GSD from world class working lines. He was a great dog, but not a good pet for 98% of people.

My uncle has had dogs all of his life. He rescued one as a puppy. The dog is very high drive as mentioned. He's insane at times. He will full sprint 50+ yards when he sees a small bug flying to leap and grab it and then will come to a complete stop to watch a plane fly over the house that you can barely see, then off to the next thing.

What I'm getting at is that he's all over the place. He bites people as well. Good dog if you can put in the time but can be hell if not

I agree, I have a Czech gsd that’s higher drive than most Mal’s I’ve been around. They are incredible dogs, all of the working line breeds. Just know what you’re getting into OP.

Your life has to be dedicated to the dog in almost every way. This type of dog is made to be with you at almost all times and needs constant stimulation (mental and physical).
If you can dedicate yourself to that, you will be rewarded with one of the coolest bonds a man can ever know.

Had a Belgian Tervuren (longhair Malinois) as a kid, the best, smartest dog I've owned.

Special Forces in Afghanistan uses them to sniff IED's and chase terrorists out of caves. I saw a Mal demonstration at a security conference a few years ago and they definitely badass dogs but way too much dog for me despite their small package.

I had a Belgian. Beautiful girl, sweet, loving. reasonably intelligent. She was not nearly as hardwired as our Aussie. She had plenty of energy and was a good dog. The Aussie took more active training and management, but if you get a smart, energetic working dog and you put in the time, you will have a wonderful companion for many years. The Belgians are definitely beautiful animals.
