re: Artificial in a boat with shrimp?

Get some Berkley Rattle Shrimp in Coastal Candy Color.
I suppose one reason I ask is a trip burned into my mind from about 4/5 years ago. Bad day on big lake. Boat owner says one last stop and he goes to a weir. The three of us guys are all throwing at the moving water. The one lady decides to just let a shrimp drift out with the current because she's bored. When the cork would get to about 30 yards behind the boat, it would go down. We all started catching. I mean, every drift. So, two of us started throwing plastics to that exact spot. Not one bite in many, many casts.

Yeah, I prefer topwater and/or plastic.
But when you're in the boat next to another boat that is pulling in nice trout at the rig or the beach, while you have one thumb in your mouth and the other in your butt playing switch, it seems pretty foolish not to spend the same amount on live bait (just in case you need it) that you did on the ice that you don't need b/c you ain't catching anything

I fished Friday that way and had a very good day with artificial. We caught 28 inside the bay at a quick stop on our way to the island.
Caught 10 at the island, 6 of them on top, which made my day
We mustered close to a limit and back by noon. I brought some cocahoes, but never caught a fish with them.
Saturday was unexpectedly rough early, and the only protected areas you could fish were only producing with live shrimp, which we didn't have.

I'm not sure if Walmart has that particular bait, but there is an Academy one exit east on I-10 on your way down that probably does.
I would go to that one before the one on Ambassador.
I don't pass through Houma going straight to Coco (take 316)
When I fish 4 Point, the Walmart along the way on 57 had plenty tackle

About 8-10 years ago, I outfished live bait in our boat throwing topwater all day.
The 6 I caught Friday were the first in 3 or so years.
Usually water and wind conditions dictate success. Early morning in more calm surf. But when we would stay for tide shift and get farther off the beach as the sun warms the water and bite turned on fishing 6-8 feet, I could still catch on top
I prefer Skitterwalks, the longer ones. I have many colors and have caught on most of them. Use holographic in morning and black with silver bottom later in the day

Coastal candy or creole Berkeley rattle shrimp. They will hate you for it. Under 4hm cork

First thing I do at sunrise is throw a she dog/pup. Will do the same if fishing late evening and it's calm.

I fish with a buddy all the time and he throws plastics while I throw shrimp.
I’ll fish plastics too okay, but when I’m going after meat I’m not above cheating.

Go for it. If they're there biting shrimp, they should have no problem biting lures.
You're actively covering more water with a moving bait.

Don't know about there, but a couple of decades ago would catch two to one what two shrimp throwers were catching off of wharf at Big Lake. I think that night with chartreause sparkle beetle, I caught 65 specs (50 before midnight the rest after) while the two of them caught around 30 total or a two hour period. They were using live and IQF shrimp.

Well, I tried. In the end, it was not worth it. While I got a few bites and caught the first fish of the day a couple times, the host really wanted me to assist in the meat haul. I had fun, but would have preferred a 100% artificial trip.

Good for you. I'd rather catch 5 on artificial than 25 on bait.

Pretty sure a lot of guides will start off with live shrimp. Then once they find a good bite, switch some anglers over to plastics to save on shrimp. If you put a plastic in front of their face while they're biting, you'll still catch

Went yesterday to Big Lake. Didn't get on the lake till 11am. Fished the ship channel first, then moved south. Caught some just south of Texaco cut on the east side of the channel, not much of any down south and when we did too small. Went to the east side weirs and notice a boat throwing nets for shrimp. Buddy pulled his net out and we dropped the poles and threw the net. Caught our limit of shrimp in about an hour. Mostly 26/30's Also had crab traps and caught a few dozen. While I would love to catch trout on artificial, seems like live shrimp is the goat. Kept 3 trout, 1 redfish and a sheepshead. Fished till dark. Plus live shrimp for bait is cheap.

This. The priority is some meat to bring home. Don’t care how we catch them. Or course my preference is to use plastic, but I am not too proud to try anything.

We usually always fish plastic/artificial but had a guy and a kid with us this weekend that rarely fish. I caught a few on topwater and then swapped to cork and shrimp. I actually enjoyed watching the ol cork go under. It was a good change of pace and i felt like a kid fishing. It also put 100 fish in the boat vs our 40 avg the previous 3 trips. I didnt feel like i had to turn in my man card at the end of the day either.

Fishing can be as complicated or simple as you want to make it. I don't know why some want to twist themselves up over trying to claim this way or that way is somehow superior
