Always been a Chevy fan boy but wouldn't buy one because of their transmissions. From the 700r4 on half ton Chevy transmissions have been horrible.

Going to disagree with you here. Their transmissions have been every bit as good as Fords, and light years better than Dodge.

ETA: I’m referring to GM’s automatic transmissions before the 8 speed.

There’s lots of mixed complaints about the 8-sp. I have a ‘19 5.3L with the 8-sp and don’t have any real major complaints. As mentioned before it can feel clunky at times if it gets “confused” with rapidly changing speeds. For 99% of the time it’s not a problem. I also haven’t seen any reports of people having them swapped or major issues (compared to the leaking roof/back glass which is numerous).

If I was buying new, I’d definitely try to get the 10sp. I’m surprised you’re finding some out there in affordable prices. Trade-In values are high, but new sales are at a premium too. Some dealers are marking up the vehicles and not honoring the manufacturer rebates. I could trade my ‘19 for more than I bought it, but I couldn’t replace it for anywhere close.

Also, the 2022 should be out later this year with the redesigned interior. I’m gonna be looking hard when they come out. Considering going to the 6.2 or the 3.0D.

Ram USED to have crappy trannies. They finally threw in the towel and went out and bought the best transmission they could find. It’s a German ZF 8 speed. When I told my dad I was looking to buy a Ram and it had a ZF tranny, he said oh those guys make our helicopter transmissions...they’re bulletproof. That was enough for me. It’s the best I’ve ever had in a 1/2 ton. Go drive one.

I have one in my 18 gmc. Developed a shutter and clunk in it. Rpm gauge would randomly jump up while driving . Flushed the transmission and fixed it all. I have 90k miles on my truck now all farm miles. Its all a gamble IMO

I have a cold air intake that I drunkenly bought that I have been meaning to install and get the truck tuned.

I have heard the tune helps the transmission issues big time.

A new truck for 10-12k sure does sound nice though.

I think a tune would really help also. I’m in the market for a truck as well but I have no clue what I would get now. Prices are very high it seems.

I had a 2019 Sierra with the 8 speed. It was the same as others have mentioned. Every now and then I’d get a low speed clunk, the first time it happened I thought someone ran into the back of me. I had 35k miles on it when I traded it in in February for a Ram (my first Ram). I don’t think I’d buy the 8 speed if I was going to keep a vehicle outside the warranty. If you get rid of vehicles every few years (doesn’t seem like you do) I’d buy the 8 speed and not worry.

The Ram is a better truck all the way around (I’ve always had GM vehicles). It rides better, has more power, transmission is way smoother, has more features for the money, paint seems to be better. Now, will it hold up? I don’t know. The only thing that was better on the GMC was the fuel mileage. I have a 35 mile commute and I would average roughly 21-22 mpg with the GMC, I struggle to see 18 mpg on the same trip with the Ram.

The reasons I switched was I have a buddy who only buys ram trucks. He’s never had a major issue with any of his. Then I got an offer in the mail saying if I switched from GM to Ram they’d give me another $1k off on top of all the rebates. My buddy buys his trucks from Mark Dodge in Lake Charles. So I contacted them. They are a volume dealer. They had the best price by far in Louisiana. I did everything online and over the phone and they drove the truck to my house and took my old one away. Never set foot in the dealership. Easiest buying experience I’ve had yet.

Guy at work traded in his lifted f150 for a RAM loaded out. It's pretty damn nice inside.

This is the Hemi 5.7 compared to the GM 5.3?

Yes, the 5.3. I didn’t compare it to the 6.2 because you can’t get the 6.2 with an 8 speed as far as I know and he was asking about the 8 speed initially. The 6.2 is more powerful and will get slightly better fuel mileage than the 5.7 Hemi.

GM doesn’t make it easy to get the 6.2. Aggravating.

my co worker has a 15 with the 5.3, which i believe is the 6 speed. it is currently in the shop getting transmission #3 installed. He has a little over 100k on the truck and does not tow anything. it is a pavement queen. I'm sorry but i would not expect any better out of the 8 speed.

I got rid of a Canyon a couple years ago with the 8 speed...it wouldn't hold a constant RPM at highway speed (it was constantly 'hunting'...it would reach RPM, then drop a couple hundred, then go back to where it started). When I began researching the issue, it worried the hell out of me. People were complaining about tranny's locking up, vehicles being in the shop for weeks at a time, and the problem wasn't going away no matter what was serviced / replaced. Like GM had no idea what to do. The first round of GM service bulletins said to replace the trans fluid . I personally had the torque converter replaced. Problem slowly began to creep back, so I bit the bullet and traded it in.

My vote? Run, don't walk, away from the 8 speed. That design has demons that the Pope couldn't exorcise.

I'm in the exact same scenario. My torque converter destroyed itself at 107K a little over a week ago and took my pump out with it. Apparently it's a well known issue that the stock torque converters are crap and lead to metal shavings in the fluid.

Supposed to be picking it up today after a rebuild
