I need some opinions on some AR-15's. I want to buy my first one soon and I've narrowed it down to the DPMS Panther Oracle and the S&W M&P 15 Sport. Thoughts?

Why these? Not saying anything is wrong with them just curious what made you narrow it down to these? What's your price range?

I would suggest looking a buying a slightly used one and not limit yourself to a certain manufacture. You will get a much better deal IMO. I bought a nice Rock River AR-15 for $700 last year.

Yeah I'm just trying to buy a good rifle without having to spend a lot of money right now. Thanks for the recommendation.

I would also take a look at Del-ton I have a Del-ton M4 upper on a CMMG lower that runs great.
You can put one together using their kit and a stripped lower for <$650

I have right at $700 in mine with all magpul furniture

Build.

You can build a better gun for 700 then what you can buy for that price.

Plus you get the enjoyment of feeling like you accomplished something.

If you're patient, you could buy the gun in sections of parts at a time; that way, you're basically putting the gun on layaway while you build it. A lot of people do this.

Plus, you wouldn't be out of a lot of money in the interim, thus you won't have to compromise on a cheap production build.

If you've got the time and interest you can do the build for the same money and have a gun with a dust cover and forward assist.

With that said, I bought the M&P Sport last year and have loved it. Rained havoc on the hogs with it, killed a few yotes and beavers and a deer that didn't have enough sense to get up and run off.

Its been between my front seat and console since last August, hasn't been cleaned and hasn't failed. I dusted two more sows yesterday.

I found it on Bayou Shooters.

I thought about building one and looked hard at the kits. I just think for what I spent I got more than I could have building one IMO.

Not the original... Armalite designed the rifle.

And I believe he said he didn't want to spend more than $700.

True, but Colt purcheased the patent and then mass produced the civilian AR and the M16.

Which is why I said "if you want to spend the extra $$$, get the Colt. About $300 to $500 more, depending.

Colt's run in the 1200 dollar range on the low end. Delton, Doublestar, Palmetto, all good brands sub 700.

Sounds about right. I bought a Colt MT6700 Competition HBAR for $995 back in 2000. Gun was sold as used but was never shot. The guy bought it for the Y2k scare and his wife made him return it

I didnt like the S&W mainly cause it only has a chrome lined chamber. I bought the Windham Weaponry AR which is the old Bushmaster plant in Windham Maine that was closed down after Remington bought Bushmaster. Read up on Windham Weaponry. I have only put around 250rds through mine and no problems so far. Most of those was with the slide fire. So 250 didnt last long.
