Pardon my ignorance, but exactly what type of kit is required to build your own? And how much does the kit cost? I've been thinking about buying an AR myself, but I've heard "you should build your own" from a lot of people.

I have seen full Del-ton kits for about $500-700. They are your basic M4 type carbine with little extra, but a good starting point.

My agency issues everyone on the road a DPMS. 200+ rifles with no major issues.

ETA: You can upgrade whatever you get later on too with a better trigger barrel ect.

Why? Why should he go with a colt? Why not an H&K or a LWRC?

Either of those is much better than a Colt, so why suggest a Colt?

I have nothing against a Colt, I just want to know why people always recommend them.

Colts Cost More and typically also have higher resale value.

What do I win?

Actually I would say HK before Colt. My pistols are HK's.

However most people don't have $2,800 sitting around for a HK. However a Colt will run about $1,200. Its more affordable.

Higher resale than H&K or LWRC? I don't think so.

Help me build my AR, bought in the Group deal with the $85 complete lower on Bayou Shooters.

What upper should I pair it with next? I think that the vendor of the upper is going to put a Spike's tactical upper on special.

Will probably be an introductory AR. I think that want to mount a scope on it and don't want to shell out the money for an ACOG or Nikon M. BUIS run around $100 which is more than I paid for the lower, any recomendations for a cheaper iron sight. Also, are the front sights removable?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I've been wanting an AR for awhile and jumped at the cheap lower.

Spike's is fine. Bravo Company is another. Been hearing alot about Palmetto as well. I bought an LMT for my 1st and putting a YHM on my current one.

Magpul makes a BUIS that are pretty cheap

They can be removed depending on the gas block (as in whether it has a gas block of a fixed front site)

Palmetto is nice for the money but I wouldn't put them in the same ballpark as BCM/LMT or YHM.

gmrkr5, what makes the others better? I just don't know enough about the different uppers to answer this myself. I got a PSA upper for my first AR build and I have been very happy with it. I just want to be more educated when I make my next AR/Upper purchase.

This is definitely not the OT, no one has asked for pics yet.

Here was my Christmas project:

Nothing too crazy, basically a M4 style AR. But I did do all of the work myself. Started with nothing but the stripped lower, put a spike's nickel boron parts kit in, then ordered a cmmg upper, removed the handguard, installed a midwest free floating handguard and fixed rear site. Since this picture I've put a magpul ACS stock and added a rail and bipod adapter to the handguard. And ordered a case and a half of ammo. Fist gun I've ever "built", it is definitely limited by the iron sights, but I'm going to use that as an excuse to build a whole new one with scope setup and fixed rifle stock.

There is no reason to build one unless you want something that you can't buy, or if you just want to do the project (me). I ordered some tools off of Amazon, they were pure crap. Get tools from midwayusa and brownells, and read the reviews about them. The biggest lesson learned is that taking off the front sight can be a complete beast. The front sights are put on with large hydraulic presses, it is very hard to remove the front sight taper pins.

some front sight pins are tapered and some are not. use a dial caliper to see which side is bigger so you know which side to push on. some
are very hard to get out as stated above.

Let me rephrase... Palmetto is putting out some nice stuff. I have one of thier lowers for the build I'm working on now. Being that the Palmetto uppers aren't that much cheaper than BCM/LMT, etc I would go with one of the later mentioned due to reputation and first hand experience with thier products.
