That is simply not true. I've raised 5 kids with JR's and they are great together. You forget just how much energy a kids has.

If it weren't for the fact that I have too many dogs now I would love to have it.

I don't think a JRT is a good dog for a 3 year old.

Why would you think this? Because they are hyper? My father has two JRT's and they would be fine with young kids.

The first time his daughter tried to take a ball away from it and it shows her real quick THAT IT'S HIS DAMN BALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He will then understand.

So you think all JRT will bite you if you try to take a ball away from them? Did you use to own one that would bite you if you took things from it? I have spent a lot of time around JRT but never been around one that would bite. Maybe that's just the way you raise your dogs vs the way I raise mine. The ones I had dealings with would drop a ball at your feet for you to throw it but that's about it.

We have a friend who used to have one and that was one ball of energy. We would all be inside and you look in the backyard and that dog was running figure 8's in the yard for no reason. Good dog but extremely hyper.

Beautiful dog... If I didn't have a 6 week old baby and a 3 year old boxer, I'd take him... JRTs are awesome dogs

Sold

In a seriousness, I have a 2 year old jack/beagle mix. She has some energy but is awesome with kids. Very smart and loving. But the "my damn ball" comment was spot on. They don't share very well.

Yes, your JRT is so much better than mine.

My parents have had one for the past 13 or so years. She STILL has to go out and bark at the deer all night. She STILL is only good for one throw of a tennis ball and then it is a game of keep away. If she hadn't hurt on of her back legs she would still be jumping like a pogo stick. Also, they tend to bond to one person and can be very jealous/protective if others approach.

The point was that terriers, including JRTs, aren't really the best dog for a toddler. They weren't bred to be lap dogs or take abuse. No one saying that they are going to attack and kill small children, but if you want a dog that will give your kid a lick on the face and then wag their tail while the kid tries to make the dog wear a hat, you should probably get a lab.

You should be in sales...
JRT are great dogs, owned one when we were kids, maybe 5-6 range, granted we lived on 5 acres. Ours loved fetch, and no jealousy issues, loved the whole family. Each dog is different, this one sounds like she has adapted to inside life pretty well. Good luck finding an owner, I will check around.

Sounds exactly like mine. You'd throw the ball and he'd run and get it, repeat two more times. Then you throw it again, he runs after it, then in mid-path takes a detour and goes to do his own thing. We thought he had ADHD.
He was also very aggressive to other kids. If my neighbor's kids were looking out my window, there would be gnashing of teeth and he'd be going apeshite and attacking the window like he was a freaking rabid wolf. It was pretty scary. Bit another kid when he was in the back yard with my son.
ETA: A well trained Jack Russell (if there is such a thing), would be my first choice as a dog x1,000.

Before I bought my first one, I remember reading a story about how they were bred for hunting, particularly to go down holes. They were known to stay in a hole as long as 48 hours, not coming out til they got what they were after.
Last night I semi-jokingly told the wife that someone was looking for a home for a kennel-trained Jack Russell. I don't remember her exact words, but divorce was definitely in there.
