The wife wants to get into mtb'ing with me. Not wanting to spend a ton until she decides to stick with it, but don't want to buy a $400 entry level bike either. I see some Motobecane's in the $700 range that seem like good deals for the components, but have no experience with them.

Mountainbiking in New Orleans? Do you mean more trail riding? Or will you take trips to actual mountains and ride your bikes on mountain trails?

It's been 10 years since I've mountain-biked seriously. I used to ride my Santa Cruz Chameleon all over the Alps. Specialized, Scott, Canyon, etc used to all have entry level models. Never met anyone with a motobecane, but I've never heard anything bad about the bikes. I bought the Chameleon frame and pieced together components. I would check craigslist for a used specialized or similar. Just an idea... try singletracks.com they have some reviews for different mtb models.

Off shore aluminum frames. Take it for what it's worth.

Aren't all frames, even the Trek, Specialized, Giant, etc ones made in China now? Pretty sure none of the big names are made in America anymore

I'm actually in Dallas, but yes probably more trail riding. There are several single track trails here and some actually have some decent climbs and descents and can get pretty technical.

Seems like now she wants a Single Speed as she prefers that.

Yeah, I can't remember which one, maybe Giant, is made in the same factory as the Motobecane. I had a friend that owned one w/ all of the top of the line gear and it was $1000 cheaper than my Felt. If I would have known I would have just bought the Motobecane from

from BIKESDIRECT.COM
or BikeIsland.com
It's the same company as Bikes Direct but it's their slightly scuffed bikes that they don't sell on Bikes direct.

There are a couple of off road parks in Grapevine that are pretty good.

The North Shore requires some legs when you go. Horseshoe is a good but short trail. Has a couple of relatively technical climbs.

Untrue. After I got divorced I built a hard tail singlespeed. I rode that bike exclusively for almost a year+. All over Moab, Park City, all the Mtb trails out my back door at the time. Climbing, decending, all of it. I have never been stronger on a bike and used to do thousands of miles in a year. A SS will teach you proper bike handling skills because you can't use your gears to "cheat". However, it's not something I'd recommend for beginners.

I bought one about 10 years ago and it's been a great bike. At the time I looked into it and they had started making them in China and basically had bought the name. But the recent reviews were still very solid and the price was hard to beat. No regrets.

I have had one for some time. Jubilee dlx I think. It is really well made and feels like a high end bike.
