The property is set up to focus on quail and upland hunting, LDWF burns the property pretty often. I have been out there plenty of times to run the dogs, but deer are going to be few and far between...

Yep, what he said. Small acreage, mostly pine.

Even turkey hunting is bad there. The dairy operations that surround it have reduced the hunting opportunities. Any big game you find out there is probably just passing through and not making a living on Sandy.

Well damn, that discouraging.

I quit hunting years ago and I'm just now getting interested in it again thanks to my 10 year old son wanting to go. Pretty much looking for somewhere way less forgiving than Joyce/Maurepas WMA's

Dove and quail are not bad out there and worth a trip. Even squirrel isn't too bad at times.

But the habitat just isn't big enough to support a deer population on the WMA. I'm sure there are some, and each man has to decide for himself what he is willing to go through for a deer, but myself, I would rather deal with Maurepas. At least there are deer there, and that new addition over by Port Vincent is easy walking, although probably crowded now.

Probably so, I've already heard several people talking about it.

Thanks for the info!

Lol! Unfortunate. When that became public, very few people knew about it. I had a nice little wood duck hole in there, and some of the biggest rabbits I've ever seen lived back there. Only ever saw 2 other people out there.

Lake Ramsey is easy. Lots of walking and bow only for deer. Not many deer out there and you need to hunt the edges or get near the river but its somewhere to go.

It's been years, but we saw sign of deer there. Hunted it a couple of times and never saw anything. Pretty land though.

I think you would have better luck at Pearl River or Ben's Creek WMA. I've taken a few bucks out of there and seen several deer and hogs on my hunts.

hasn't been a wma for a few years now.....

drive to sherburne....

significantly better chance.. and astronomically high odds of killing a hog

I've only been on Pearl River WMA once on a boat. Launched at Crawfords Landing (west side of WMA just north of I-10). There was some sandbars along the river that you should be able to beach a pontoon boat on and walk in from there. Don't think you'll be able to get into any of the little bayous and smaller cuts off the river though

There's public land in port Vincent? Why am I just now hearing this. I've been living there for 5 years

Southeast of there, really more like the French Settlement area.

I B: There is wild quail at Sandy. I don't know that I would call it a significant population, but they are there. A couple of coveys I believe. I wouldn't shoot too many out of one covey, or else they may be gone before you know it.

There are very few coveys and the birds there know how to escape, your odds are very low of locating and killing birds. I normally make it out there just to exercise the dogs before quail season opens and get lucky from time to time with a covey.

While the property looks good, the bird numbers just aren't there...

Its a small area that was added as part of Maurepas Swamp WMA. Think its called the Crusel Tract
