I live in North La, but work in West Texas. We have a ton of quail out here and even caught some and wonder how hard it would be to raise some back home.

I know back in the day we had wild quail, but the ole timers claim that fire ants and cotton poison killed them off.

Anyone have any experience with raising quail?

Just to clarify

Are you talking about catching wild quail and raising them?

Every day pen-raised bobwhite quail wake up looking for a way to die. Some of the other species do better.

We have temporarily. Bobwhites need space and usually do better with raised enclosures (as mentioned, they are looking for ways to die). They are also super aggressive in the spring, both male and female.
You probably could get away with a ground enclosure but it would have to be fairly large depending on how many quail you want.
Pharoah/Cortunix are much heartier, bigger eggs, and not as aggressive.

My grandpa was a huge quail hunter in the midwest. Always had extremely well trained bird dogs.

One year when I was a kid and he was too old to hunt, we got him some quail and a pen thinking he would like to raise some.

He shed a tear and wanted then turned loose, he enjoyed them so much in the wild.

My brother's friend was doing it and selling the eggs. He eventually had way too many. So, he decided to go release them on some of his property so he could hunt them from time to time. One day he decided to go shoot a few. When he showed up all the quail flew to him for food.

This is my understanding and that pen-raised one don't survive in the wild.

Got to buy them from a reputable supplier. What are you doing? Watching those Indian YouTubers with their rubber band and cardboard traps?

Don't catch wild animals and put them in a cage for your enjoyment

I've raised them before. They were cool little birds but a little boring compared to other birds that are more social towards their keepers

Looked into it years ago but never did it. Coturnix were the easiest for pens from what I understand.

I raised meat rabbits in pens. Never understood why more people don't do this.

I would love to release a bunch of quail on some family land and see if they can populate. I am sure its a dead end, but would be cool if they did produce.

I counted 36 out my window yesterday. I have been feeding them daily and out here in West Texas there are a ton of them.

There's a box which opens every day and has a recall cage if you want to let some go and have a safe place for them

If you really want to help them, get with a local wildlife conservation biologist (game warden or he will know who is) and ask for suggestions. Plant things they eat (peas?) and plant stuff that benefits them (cover). Trap and or poison any animals that prey on them (not hawks obv unless you like jail). Make your place as hospitable to them as possible.

You will likely find good quail habitat is also good deer habitat. Win win
