You down for December? Far as I'm concerned the more the merrier as long as someone else has a boat. 115,000 acres is a lot of land haha.

The fire wood alone would fill up the floor of a 20ft mako. I just pulled up an old pack list from a few years ago. I'm going to put it in the email as well. It's the little things you look over i.e. ant killer. There really isn't too much dry land down there and the land that exists...happens to be covered in red ants. I learned the hard way. It's well worth the prep and hassle though

Thanks man. I really appreciate it.
Seriously though if anyone else wants in on this, come on. PAL OB gathering.

Those that go, watch the weather big time. It's getting to the point in between fronts that fog gets real bad and can stick around for a couple days at a time.
Also, if a cold front push thru, the river has a very bad chop with roll back waves. Run the west side of the river once you leave out the jump if the wind is blowing out the North or NW. From there to head of the pass is a 8 mile run and a lot of open water for small boats. Also, watch for logs just under the surface. I took out a prop and shaft once along with one rudder. Not good.
Pick your days and also if a hard cold front comes thru, a lot of water will blow out fast. Running the Mississippi River in the winter is not for the fait of hearts.

This pic is from teal season crossing the river. I'm little guy to the right. I hate the river in small boat. If weather is shitty, you can run through the marsh but then it's easy to get stuck on a sandbar. Good luck and be safe!
My buddy has been waxing arse that way.

yup...was down there two years ago...in the camp canal area...we slayed em...really need a mud - surface drive - go devil boat to get around in the marsh...I hear the designated camp area is a good place for everyone to camp at...good dock facilities...would need a generator if you were staying a few days...I would be interested...not a single boat type of trip...you need at least two boats going down for safety unless you or a friend have a camp down on the place...

I've hunted it for years. I'm from Venice orginally and still hunt there a lot. It can be good depending on where you hunt.
Like others have said running the river can be dangerous for people not used to it. Even more so if in a small boat (less than 16-17ft with low sides). Once you get to the head of the passes (southwest, south, pass a loutre), you have to watch for sand bars in pass a loutre and sand bars and rocks in south pass. They also have a huge dredging operation at the beginning of pass a loutre right now so if you are running at night be careful. I would recommend idling into the canals in south pass so you don't run aground or hit rocks and mess your motor up. In pass a loutre I would recommend being careful also since a lot of the canals can be too shallow to run in. Definitely don't run around wide open everywhere. I've seen too many people run aground over the years in those areas.
For camping, they have a few designated areas. The biggest one is off of Dennis pass near the beginning of Loomis pass. They used to have some camping areas in south pass but not sure if they still do. Do not camp in an area that is not a designated camping area or you can be ticketed.

So I may be able to get my boat to the camp ground but need to have the mud for hitting the other areas.
This would be a good time with you idiots

A few things.....
I hunt Venice a lot like 3-4 days a week.
This week for example without radar Venice is out it's completely fogged in and the fog isn't really breaking on the river. For those of you coming to try it for the first time, watch out for fog it will scare your more than 8' swells off an ocean liner in a go devil boat.
Pass A Loutre..... The pass itself is LOADED with sand bars, you can go from 20' of water to 1' of water in a flash. If you have never run the pass you need someone to help you with that.
All of that being said the ducks are there period. We are having like most of the state the best year in years down there. It's worth the effort to learn, but you have to respect the whole area. 30 years ago I spent 4 days on an airboat stuck on a sandbar off pass a loutre with no food or water and no way to contact help back then. This stuff can happen. Don't rely on a cell phone down there to communicate they don't always work IMO a GOOD VHF radio is a must, a good GPS is a must, and I have gotten to the point where I don't like running the river without radar it just makes it so much safer.
Logs are always an issue but with the river low like it is right now they are a very low risk. The river will start to rise in the next few weeks (hoepfully not the fishing is on fire in it right now) and when it first rises logs are a BIG concern.
My preferred way to hunt down there is big boat and pirogues and stay at my camp on land after the hunt. Camping is fun and all but I like my TV, ice maker, shower, electricity, etc.... on a budget camping is great but there are some decent places to stay down there for not that expensive as an alternative.
Lastly I would be happy to help you all if I can, I don't give out a lot of spots and certainly won't give them out on the internet, but if I'm down the weekend you all go (most likely will be) you can follow me down river, use my camp as a staging area whatever helps. I treat my camp as the door is always open when I am there.
If anyone has more questions please let me know. Sorry for the long post but if you are interested in Venice hope it helps....

A few weeks ago I hit a log under the water in the river (in between Pilottown and Venice) and broke half the skeg off of my 1 year old yamaha outboard. Very low risk like you said but it can happen.
