Anyone built an outdoor dog kennel?

I want to build a large outdoor dog kennel for my dog. She is a Australian Shepherd Border collie mix. I’m looking for some ideas. I want it to be big enough for her to be able to run around. She has climbed out of a regular chain link fence before so I don’t like keeping her in there

Built many, tractor supply has the welded panels that are 4x8 and plenty big enough. A tin roof will keep her inside, make sure you tie down with trailer house straps and concrete floor with a drain.

Concrete, concrete, and concrete. After that, it’s all aesthetics.
You will need a roof though. Get your wife involved. The cost and time to do it will triple.

I have those concrete square garden tiles around the perimeter of our dog kennel so they cant dig around the fence easily

Is there any advantage to making the floor off the ground? I was thinking of just leaving the grass as the ground and using something like you have so she couldn’t dig out

Have fun with the shite, mud and nasty dog. Don’t be cheap!

That will last about a week and then there will not be any grass just dirt. Use concrete so you can clean very easily with hose pipe and a little Clorox every now and then.

how big are you looking to run around in. A kennel is usually not big enough to exercise in but big enough for dog to be comfortable. Proper drainage and a slightly elevated bed is pretty important. You can secure the top many ways but a rain proof cover is ideal. You can add fencing to kennel for dog to exercise but kennel is more of a home area and is best kept clean with a solid concrete floor.

Concrete is the way to go. Get as smooth a surface finish as they can do. I recently purchased specific artificial turf to put over the concrete as it can cause irritation to your dogs skin. The turf has drainage holes and the grass blades are over 1 1/4”in length. Very comfortable, looks nice also.

That sounds nice. How did you get the turf

I built this kennel for my Lab. The kennel is 5x10 and the concrete is 6x12. I have a Tin roof with foam board insulation on the bottom. I have a sun shade on the east side to protect from morning sun. Also have an 18” outdoor fan mounted to ceiling to give him some air movement.

Got materials from a fencing company, and built it myself. Roughly 6’x20’, with a tarp on top for shade. I chose against the time/$/effort of a concrete slab. Worked out well for me because after my dog had puppies, I could move the kennel 6-8’ over, and simply hose all of the poop from that day into the grass.
Next dog of mine would rather spend time in a travel carrier, so i disassembled the large kennel and sold it for $100.00.

I built a kennel for a couple dogs I had years ago. I paved a 10x10 ft. area, put a 8 ft. chain link fence around it and put a tin roof over it so they couldn't climb out.
I then build a couple plywood boxes on a stand to keep them about 6 inches off the slab and would fill them with hay when needed for bedding.
Every day I'd pick up the dog crap and hose it out and about every 2 weeks I'd give it a good washdown with soap, bleach and a stiff bristle brush.
Don't do a simply dirt floor. That is nothing but a real mess to deal with in the long run.

Have 2 5x10 pens from tractor supply. Can put together to make a larger one. Concrete in the ground. Shade screen on half the east and west facing sides. Tin roof to block sun and rain. If I can get my pic thing to work I’ll post a pic.

I have one from Outdoor Products Manufacturing on Facebook. He's in Independence. It is extremely extremely nice. I placed mine on top of a wooden treated deck I built that is on top of concrete blocks. That way I can wash anything through the spacing of the deck. However my dogs rarely use the bathroom in the kennel.

Ordered the turf on amazon. Just do a search and look for the size you need.
