re: Anybody ever called in a deer
I hunted a Mississippi place for a number of years that had hills and hardwoods. At times, it’d be impossible to get to a spot without crunching leaves. Id take two grunt calls and jog into a spot beside an old cutover, blowing both calls as I went. Id also stutter step a bit so it sounded like a chase. I never killed doing that, but twice had decent bucks come out right after I had sat down on the ground.

If I saw someone do this through the woods, I would think they’ve absolutely gone insane

Numerous times with a can, from 10 pts to button heads. I've called them blind and used it to bring deer in closer. Sometimes they ignore it but I've never seen a negative reaction.

When they’re in rut, it’s not hard to call them in. They act retarded when they have does on the brain.

re: Anybody ever called in a deer
About 25 years ago on a freezing morning, I was sitting on a metal lean-to. No padded seat, no arm or gun rests, wearing a XXL Carhart coverall that was loose as hell, and facing the north wind with no face or head covering other than a cap. I was hurting.

I mean I was shivering all morning. I had just done a round of grunting and as I was shoving my hands back into the pocket openings to keep them warm, I heard something running up behind me. I was fighting to get my hands out of those openings, grabbing the gun from my lap, and trying to turn. When I got turned, a beautiful 8-pt has already jumped the fence and was staring up at me. Our eyes were less than 20ft from each other’s. He bolted, I whipped around and shot a tree. The coolest and most frustrating hunting experience I’ve ever had.

I keep grunting hoping to have another come running up. Hasn’t happens yet, but next time I’ll be ready.

re: Anybody ever called in a deer
One of the craziest things that ever happened to me involved a fawn bleat.

I was hunting on the ground with my bow and was tucked in some yaupon just a few feet off of a deer trail. I blew the fawn bleat and almost immediately a doe came running full tilt up the trail. When it got even with me it hit the brakes and looked around in every direction. It really looked and acted like it was pissed off and as I was not interested in shooting it, I let it walk. Just then a small eight came running up the trail from the same direction as the doe and stopped right in front of me. When it stopped, I heard some crashing from the yaupon behind me and a six point appeared and started to posture at the eight point. The two of them began to fight right smack in front of me for what seemed like minutes. They got so close to me at one point that I started to try to back up into the yaupon. I was afraid that I might get gored, but suddenly they both straightened up, looked hard at each other and bolted in opposite directions.

I'm pretty sure that the fawn bleat attracted the doe and both bucks were hot on her trail. Since then I have attracted does with it, but I have never blown it on the ground again.

re: Anybody ever called in a deer
I gave a bow hunter friend of mine a fawn in distress call.He didn’t think it would work but he was like that about everything.
He was walking through the woods to make an afternoon hunt blowing it and a big doe ran up about 10 yards from him.He said she was all bristled up ,looked like she wanted to hurt something. He tried to nock an arrow and she ran off.

A few years ago I was watching an 8 too far off walking the wrong way. I did a grunt and he damn near did a back flip and took off running, opposite of my direction Fastest I’ve ever witnessed a deer run off. That grunt call is probably still laying out in the woods.

Setting up a ground blind (SW Miss) years ago and aluminum poles knocked together a few times. 8 point rushed in at about 20 yards & I got him.

re: Anybody ever called in a deer
I grunt in several bucks every year. Their ears are scary accurate. I had a spike come out of the woods 275 yards away on Monday after I grunted. He walked a straight line to my tree, stopped short 50 yards then circled the tree checking the wind.

I don’t think grunting is as unsuccessful as people think. I just think the in this type terrain, many times a buck will slip in and circle down wind and leave before the hunter ever sees it

Hunted a thicket the other day with the right wind. Grunted and 15 min later a deer came in and stayed in the thick cover and circled down wind of me. As soon as it got in my scent it blew and hauled ass.

re: Anybody ever called in a deer
Years ago before the nice climbers came out I had one made of wood and metal. When I climbed a tree it sounded much like rattling horns. One time I climbed a pine tree and no sooner than I got settled a nice 8 point came slipping through the woods looking for the noise he heard. That was the only deer I ever called up rattling and I wasn’t even rattling.
