Go to Walgreens and get some Dramamine (over the counter).
Take it the night before when you're about to go to sleep, then follow the regular dosage of taking about an hour before you get on the boat and every 3-4 hours afterwards.
You can also try these wristbands. I've never used them myself, but a buddy of mine swears by them and wears them every time he goes fishing.

It was flat all day. Glass calm on the way back. The guy's 35/36' Cabo was super nice. Drug Wahoo baits in the morning (no luck) and hit the Shoes for Tuna around 3pm. Caught 4 nice yellowfin (140, 120, 80, 70) and everything else we either cut up or threw back. Filled the fish boxes, took showers...cruised back on autopilot. At the docks by 10pm.
After I gave my BIL a couple of zip locks I cleaned everything up and vacuumed them.

I've used Sea Bands and they work for me.
Diesel fumes did me in. Went on a 3-tank dive and the engine was idling when we surfaced after the second dive. I was sick within 30 minutes, I missed the third dive, and didn't recover until we were almost back to the dock.
If your friend has a diesel powered boat, stay out of the backdraft. Keep fresh air blowing in your face and watch the horizon.

Only ever been seasick once in my life. I've been in 10' seas in a 31' CC and was fine. Been drunk as can be in the cabin of a sport fisher and never had an issue. Hungover on a ride offshore too many times to count.
But riding on a crewboat for the first time down below the deck where I couldn't see a thing left me pretty damned sick. Never threw up, and once I got back outside on the deck I felt better even though the seas were bad. But that 4 hour stretch on the ride out were miserable.

Y'all making me nervous about impending offshore trips. I was just gonna go champ it up.

Most agree that it is the disconnect between the body and the eyes - so backseat more likely to get motion sickness than front seat or driver - and below deck more likely than above deck to get seasick.
However, if your up on a mast or a flybridge, you will pick up more motion, so that might be a concern - midship rather than on the rail or at either end is going to be the most stable part of the boat.

I get seasick in open water and have avoided going fishing the last 15 years because of it. In my experience Dramamine worked somewhat but made me very sleepy, the patch was hit or miss, mostly miss. I have a couple of friends that swear by two remedies:
1. Phenegren - it's a prescription anti-nausea medicine that any doctor can prescribe.
2. Pot - never tried it, but buddy of mine that charters swears that it will cure seasickness in minutes.
Feel bad for those that get seasick. Pretty damn miserable experience.
