Any suggestions on killing prickly pear beyond digging up their roots?

I've tried 3 different sprays that Google suggested, and it will not kill them. The only thing that I can figure out that kills them at this point is , whatever those moths are that bed in them.

I’ve never had a problem with them. If they are really bothering me I just chop them with a machete.

You feel like a ninja slicing through them.

Cut it and spray the base with triclopyr.

ETA: spray right after you cut it.

Chemical Control (Best for extensive infestations)Spot spraying: Herbicide programs utilizing fluroxypyr (e.g., Vista XRT) or picloram (e.g., Tordon 22K) are highly effective.

Application: Spray both sides of the fleshy pads until they are thoroughly wet, but not to the point of runoff. This is best done in hot, dry weather when the plant is actively growing.

The ranch I hunt on had burned all the thorns off the prickly pears back in the droughts of the 40s and 50s for the cattle and deer to eat water so they were all gone (7300 acres). The owners in the early 90s decided they wanted it back so we planted it all over by cutting it with machetes and sticking the cut part down in the soil and pushing a little topsoil over it. I did that for about 4 weekends over the summer and had more thorn pokes than I thought possible and learned that it is incredibly difficult to kill prickly pear.

I still have my grand father’s pear burner setup. That lasted way beyond the 50’s because I remember burning them in the mid 90’s.

Dr Craig Harper cocktail. It’ll kill a gumball tree so a prickly pear should be a cakewalk.

I'm using that on kudzu. Cut some 2 weeks ago, cut more last week and will be cutting more tomorrow most likely.

I cut the vine at the base and with a spray bottle spray the herbicide on the base of the vine. I'm hoping it works well. I cut some vines the size of my wrist.

Also, triclopyr will kill sweet gum. You spray the leaves on the tree, it will die. I have a spot on my land that has a lot of kudzu growing over a bunch of sweet gums.

it's killing the trees. Actually have been using Crossbow on it which is a mix of triclopyr and glyphosate.

be careful with the Imazapyr, it's soil active and can damage trees you might be treating something else near or under

Its 21 acres in central texas. I wouldn't go as far as saying they're taking over anything , but they are definitely there. If you cut them they just resprout

I asked a S TX rancher how they controlled cactus in the pastures. He said the most effective method they had found was to spray them down with diesel fuel.

You’re right thank you. Won’t kill grass but weeds and anything woody.

i take it you dont have an applicators license? If you do or know someone who has it, Surmount will take them out with ease.

If not, Remedy (triclopyr) and diesel will do it but concentration level is debateable. Stuff aint cheap so i wouldnt mix more than 10% concentrate for basal spray to start.

Listening to Land and Legacy guys, guest recommender 47% Gly, 2% Imazapyr and 1% Milestone with 50% water. Supposed to not have gelling issues and will store well.

Haven’t tried it but intend to this fall as I have all the components on hand.
