Any decent fishing near or say even a relatively short boat ride from Freds on Amite River

I have a 16 foot flat bottom and do mostly salt water. My son wants to fish more and is fine doing fresh water. I am willing to learn but don't really know where to start. Not looking for honey holes but any general guides for spots to consider anywhere near that area as well as what species to expect to target would be helpful. I can try to research what tackle to use if there are any decent spots worth going to. It's easy spot for me to launch and would def take him more if that area holds fish. He has been fishing a pond he can walk to daily but it's not the best fishing in that pond so I just want to put him on some more fish if possible. He caught one small bass yesterday after 5-6 days of getting skunked in the pond and you'd think we just caught a marlin with how excited he got.

Never did great around there, but I've caught some in flat lake when the water looks good. Diversion can have fish on docks when there aren't a million boats around.
My parents live on the river and catch a ton of catfish.
You can have a really fun/productive evening throwing out noodles. There are probably some threads on here with different ways to make/bait them. That would be my suggestion.

Probably so, but with boat traffic around that area I just avoid it. If i were you, go down about 20 minutes to bayou barbary. Have a landing over there that feeds into Amite river further down with a small boat ride. Have had good luck with bream, catfish, and bass. Also, nowhere near the boat traffic. For kids I've taken mine throwing Matrix mini's around grass beads and went to town on spawning goggle eye.

I have seen a few pics Wednesday night bass tournament at Canal Bank and it looks like they are catching a few more fish.

This time of year your best bet is to wait till dark and go hit every light hanging over water in diversion. Grass shrimp and ditch minnows will sink a lot of corks. While you’re at it, bring a spotlight and catch some frogs. He’ll have a blast

Take a right when leaving Fred’s launch and look for some riprap on your right, drop the trolling motor and follow that canal with chartreuse crankbaits. You’re welcome.

Thanks everyone. Looking into a lot of these places now and will try to explore freshwater fishing more in the very near future.

If you're closer to Prairieville/Gonzales, the St' James Boat Club launch is right down Airline/61 past where it crosses I-10. No launch fee, and you'd be launching into Blind River that goes all the way out to the Diversion Canal. There are a ton of canals off that river, and it's much less boat traffic than the Fred's area. Two boat launches, seldom crowded, and you won't have to deal with the barstool captains telling you how to launch your boat.
