Not a 30 cal bullet is a huge disadvantage. Granted, it still has dozens, if not more, bullets available but the starting point is already second place.

The 6.5's claim to fame is ballistic coefficient. It slings very long skinny bullets that penetrate well.

I've killed a mountain of deer with it and have yet to recover a bullet. The dutch love it for it's penetration.

It's huge in europe, but it never caught on here. It's got a cult following because of the super low recoil, but it'll never amount to much state side.

It also carries an odd amount of energy. It surprised my how much a 150 grain bullet is supposed to have.

Yea but it's a punk round in a .300 mag culture.

The penetration you get from a bullet with that kind of sectional density is insane, but that's not where the emphasis is with the american market. It's also metric as frick which doesn't help.

I have a pair of custom built M96's in 6.5 swede that I will never part with.

Say what you want, but a round THAT metric is going to have trouble state side.

My kid will start off with it though. Nothing else offers that much performance with that little recoil IMO.

While I'm not a fan of those enormous pistol cartridges like the .500. I have shot the .460 and it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Would be a pretty good pistol to have in brown bear country if you weren't wanting to tote a long gun IMHO. You can actually shoot it without blowing your head off with a second shot on recoil. And good god does it deliver some damage.

Weak comment there bud. You sound like an anti-gunner.

As mentioned the round has a definite application in social situation with bears and other large predators that need to be stopped RIGHT NOW.

Along with the .460

They have a unique place with smith x frames

Gigantic arse rounds that are half-arse portable

I wish marlin would chamber the .460 in a lever gun. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Know how I know you've never been in bear country?

How heavy is a 500?

Best thing about a pistol is its light and easily carried. If it weighs a ton may be better to take a rifle for hiking in bear country.

The x frames are big.

But you can shoot it with one hand which you cannot do with a lever gun.

Marlin is fricking stupid for not making lever guns in .500 and .460

It should have been the first thing on the drawing board. Those pistol rounds smoke the old school .35-70 loads.

4-5 pounds. That is heavy. But better than being bear chow.

Yea they are fricking huge revolvers.

They have a place though. There isn't much better for shooting a polar bear off your face than a snub nose .500 smith x frame

Depends on the length of barrel. Anywhere from 3 1/3 -5 lbs.

It actually handles well since it has so much weight at the muzzle. The ballistics on this thing are outrageous. The largest grain bullet it fires has about three times the energy of a .44 mag at the muzzle, and is effective at least up to 200 yds.

I agree completely about those needing to be in lever guns. They're WAYYYYYY better than most of the rounds in them nowadays.

The .460 I shot really did surprise me how easy it was to shoot. You want to shoot multiple rounds of something that will kill the frick out of anything on the planet with one hand really fast... it will do it nicely. But like I said, if you are letting a noob shoot it, you have to warn them about how to not blow your own head off the first time because I've seen that 'accidental' second round go off a couple of times now on these high recoil frickers and that's dangerous as hell. You have to get used to shooting it.

And yes they are highly portable compared to a long gun. No comparison. Put it in a shoulder holster and you're fine. Yeah, it's huge in that X frame but it has to be.

Seriously though, if you get the chance to shoot a .460, just do it. You guys know I'm a light and fast kind of guy when it comes to bullets but that thing will make a believer out of you if you are bear country. frick a bear. Knock his dick in the dirt like it ain't shite.

Marlin needs their arse kicked into a dumpster for not pursuring the .460 and .500 in lever guns.

.30-30 should be obsolete with the advent of those two.

I agree completely. I was always a .35 Rem in those lever actions kinda guy back in the day. If you're gonna go lever action, heavy bullets beat fast simply because of the ranges involved. Not that these are fast. They are. But they're big as hell on top of it.

Truly devastating terminal ballistics.

Plus it answers the mouthbreather 1911 mantra of "I shoot a .45 cuz they don't make a .46" kinda idiot in all caps with a bunch of exclamation points.
