Marlin needs their arse kicked into a dumpster for not pursuring the .460 and .500 in lever guns.

Folks used to sling a 50-70 gubment round at buffalo back in the day. Used to be the official round of the US Army.

Yea the .35 rem is a slammer that never really caught on for some stupid reason.

.30-30 should have went away when the .35 came out, and it should have went away when the .460 came out.

You know how us americans are though. We like what works. I shoot a .30-30 regularly and have piled up some deer with it. I would have been better off with a .460 though every time I lit that rifle off.

How about the .300 whisper which has been reduced to the history books?

Downshift,
Why'd you have to say that? Now you've hurt my 300/221 (AKA 300 Whisper) barrel's feelings...

Sorry I can't get the pic rotated.

How long is the barrel on that thing?

I figured out what wildcat was because of the .300 whisper

Yeah I mean the whole point of the lever action is to shoot big round chunks of lead. Now granted there's a point where that just becomes more pain than gain, but come on...

The .35 was definitely superior to the 30-30 but it wasn't superior ENOUGH. Understandable it wasn't going to overtake it's market share. But the 460??? shite that's not even something you have to think hard about. You can shoot it IN A REVOLVER...

It slings very long skinny bullets that penetrate well.

Did someone mention long, skinny bullets?
In this pic are three of my handgun hunting rounds. On the far left is a nonfactory 30 caliber round w/ a 150 gr Nosler Accubond; the parent brass is the 307 Winchester previously mentioned. The 307 Winchester is prolly used more nowdays to load wildcat (non factoary) rounds than for the factory round. For comparison, the middle round is a 308 Win w/ a 150 gr Hornady SST bullet. The round on the far right is a 6.5 JDJ round that uses one of Downshift's "long skinny bullets," a 120 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip.

Yea but they don't have that whole pressure restriction thing with the .460 or .500

The .30-30 is fantastic and has killed more deer than the record books could ever keep track of, but it's time for marlin to chamber the 336 in some modern loads.

I am a huge fan of .264 rounds for deer.

I've yet to recover a .264 bullet

There's a gun shop in state that custom makes .500 in a lever action for guides.

Marlin needs to make them.

Marlin has a huge loyal following in the swamp. Nobdoy would turn down more firepower though. The lever action has a place in south LA. It just makes no sense to not offer it in these new, compact, powerhouse rounds.

The usual barrel length for Contenders is 14". The 300 Whisper Contender barrel is 10". I split the difference and made mine 12". It has the appropriate twist to also handle subsonic rounds, but I've never worked up a subsonic load. It handles supersonic 125 gr hunting loads just fine, though.

That's awesome.

Such a versatile round.

I just hate that the "blackout" caught on but the "whisper" didn't

I've killed >25 deer w/ my 6.5 JDJ. The only bullet (w/ core/jacket separated) I recovered was a 100 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. I quit using that bullet on deer. You're right.....the 6.5's kill way out of proportion to the bullet diameter/weight.

I've killed north of 30 deer with a 6.5x55 swede and have yet to recover even a piece of a bullet, and have cleaned a ton of deer.

Something about that long skinny bullet just flat out works damn well.

ETA: They're just too damned metric

.327 Federal. Give up a .357 round just for one more shot? Fail.

I had pretty much the same reaction to you when the 327 Federal first came out. But given time, I've changed my mind. The 327 Federal missed the boat because of poor timing. I think it has great potential as a "lady's revolver" for concealed carry. In a compact, lightweight frame revolver, compared to the venerable 38 Spec, the 327 Fed has more energy than the 38 Special and one additional round, yet much less recoil and muzzle blast. Unfortunately, the concealed carry market was very small when the round first hit the market. Now there are few guns chambered in it and ammo is hard to find (even before Sandy Hook).

The .327 was just behind the times I think.

The .38spl should be out of the question since the .327 came out.

You should be able to buy either a .327 or a .357 revolver

Accidentally clicked on the ob here and was drawn to this topic. +2 to the 6.5x55, I have two of them: a sporterized carbine -length Swede and a m70 featherweight.

6.5 Swede isn't going anywhere ... I even saw an assortment of
6.5x55 on the shelf at academy.

.41 magnum?

I have a Blackhawk I am contemplating selling.
Beast of a cartridge that is used in hunting but a .44 would probably be a better choice.
