Looking for a more reasonable Kamodo grill to get. In-laws have he big Green Egg which we love, but the price is a little beyond what we are looking for. Curious if anyone has experience with something a little cheaper but gets similar results.

Thanks for the input.

I'll be the first to say I never read the OB, so if there are prior threads that I didn't find in the search feature, please link them and roast me to kingdom come.

They would likely be found on the Food/Drink Board.

I've always had the idea to make one out of 321 stainless and castable refractory but I haven't gone through with it yet. Seems like I could make me an ultra badass rig for about 5-600 dollars

If you are using stainless for the structure, why would you use castable refractory? Why not just use a ceramic fiber or other suitable, and lightweight, insulation?

I have an egg, but the Kamodo Joe and vision look to be nice Ceramic cookers. You can get a large egg for around 700 if you find the right dealer. Some of these high end pool, patio, fireplace stores like to jack the price up to 1200. Some people just don't know any better.

All being said, make sure you research the warranty. BGE has a lifetime warranty on all ceramics. Eventually, if you cook a lot like me, it will crack. The base of my egg developed a crack a few months back, went to the store and picked up a new one. Same thing when the internal ceramic firebox cracked.

I can't say enough about BGE customer service and warranty. I have heard that buying ceramic cookers at box stores like Sams voids warranty, but that could be BS. I personally believe paying a couple hundred extra on a BGE is worth it.

This. IMO the price difference is well worth it for the BGE. I'm cheap too, believe me. I have one and my dad has gone through two other brands and my neighbors have some of the others additionally. They all wish they had the BGE. Mine is 3 years old and I need to replace the gasket and there is some rust on the cast iron parts I have to oil occasionally, but outside of that it is in like new condition.

A ceramic cooker will most likely last 10 years if properly taken care of. 20 or longer easily is very possible. $300-400 over that time span is nothing, especially for your piece of mind.

The BGE is the best at being sealed off. To keep heat in, and to shut off air flow to kill the charcoals. I can kill my flame almost immediately, although that is certainly not killing the heat. But my neighbors and dad's for example will often burn all the charcoal out even when "sealed".

Every time I have looked at ceramic grills I always think the BGE is being petty in the lack of accessories they sell with their grills. The last time I looked they even wanted to charge for device to remove the ashes.

I have cooked on a BGE a couple of times and I really do not like them as well as I do my Charbroil 940x. It is a very old, proven design that I do very well cooking on. Large cooking surface, heavy construction, easy to smoke on, easy to grill on, easy to clean and easy to move around. The only advantage the ceramics have is their ability to hold heat for a long period of time BUT they are so small you really can't cook a lot meat on them. I like to do 5 or 6 racks of ribs or 3 or 4 butts when I do them because the meat freezes so well.

The 940x is the best value and best all around charcoal/wood burner there is IMHO.

I have the Cypress Cooker as they call it. It's sold by Bayou Classic. The same company that does all the crawfish pots and stuff. I'm satisfied so far. I've had it for about 6 yrs. the first weekend using it the lid hinge jammed and I cracked the lid in half. I called them and explained what happened they shipped me a new lid and had hinge for free.

Check out this company and see if you can locate a local retailer. I think Home Depot may sell them. From what a guy told me, the difference between them and BGE is Vision includes accessories where as BGE you have to buy them separately. To me that would be a big deal bc I think we've spent ~$500-$600 on my tather's BGE.

I agree on value and I'll never argue that. You don't buy a BGE for the Value, end of story. I'd get a weber for "value". Sure some of the other ceramics also may be a better value. I don't think anyone will disagree. Yes BGE's lack accessories that come with it like some of the others, but there's plenty of accessories you can buy aftermarket and you don't have to buy the BGE stuff.

But again, if you want a great grill that's going to last you 10 years you don't always go for "value". If you remotely have the money and you want to buy what's going to just work, you buy the BGE. Saving $400 over 10 years and having to deal with something that whole time that is not exactly what you wanted is not the value you always want.

I do 2 8-10 lb boston butts overnight all the time on my BGE. I light the coals about 8, put the meat on about 9. This allows me to get the temp set well by 10pm. Once I have it set, I sleep great and wake up and check it at 6. Never a worry that its going to be anything but within 5-10 degrees as it was when I went to bed. I pull them off at 10-noon depending on their temp, cooler them, and they are great to eat anytime the rest of the day. That's worth a good bit of value to me.

You can probably find that with the others, but you can definitely get it with the BGE.

My first 940x lasted 17 years. Totally different grill. The ONLY advantage a ceramic has over the 940x is it's ability to hold heat for a long period of time. I don't smoke near as often as I grill.

I agree that value does not mean cheap but I doubt very seriously a BGE will last longer than some of the the other ceramics. By the time you get a table to sit one in you really have a lot of money tied up in them.

If you want a ceramic that holds temp for a long time but is hard to move and subject to breaking get one.

If you want trouble free grilling, smoking when you need too and a long lasting grill that has been made for 75 years or more get a 940x.
