Alright woodworkers/furniture builders, help me with a cabinet door

I have an old china cabinet that I need to sell. It has 2 doors on the bottom and one was bumping the other so it wouldn't close all the way. I thought I knew how to fix by taking the door off, using a chisel to remove some wood on the unit itself behind the hinge and put back. It now closes clear, but the door keeps popping open like the hinge is not wanting to close all the way. Now it's worse than it was. I can shim some wood back in place where I removed it if I need to, but need to know how to fix it. Thanks for the help!

A magnetic door catch might be easiest. Doesn’t sound like it needs to be true to period in restoration since you chiseled part of it out.

Sounds like the door is warped.

I built my first set of cabinets last year and had one door warp. Definitely fits the bill. Shimming out the bottom hinge MIGHT help. could look goofy AF though.

Is the hinge on the outside of the cabinet or on the inside frame of the opening?

magnets, drill a shallow hole where the door meets the cabinet and epoxy in some small magnets.

I am considering replacing the hinges all together

Here's what's happening. You cut out more meat on the hinge that attaches to the cabinet carcass and that brings the edge of the door closer to the wood of the opening of the carcass. That makes the door on the hinge side hit the opening much sooner than it should and that makes the door pop open because of too much pressure on the hinged side of the door.
You should have just planed, or sanded the opposite side of the door so it could close and not hit the other door.

Gumbo is right. You could just buy new hinges that have screws to make them slightly adjustable to help make them flush. If you dont want to buy new hinges cut small peices of wood the size of your hinge to use as shims. I had to do this before and mine are still working fine after a few years. Just takes a little trial and error.

Buy a set of self closing hinges. They’re not actually self closing but they have an internal spring that keeps them closed. Those couple with the magnet closure should keep it closed all the way.
