But seriously, any OB'er is welcome to give me a shout and try to come make a hunt. Polar Pop, Clyde and gorillacoco have all killed ducks with me before and can vouch I'm good people.
Good. Lets make this work and trade hunts. Polar Pop has become the kiss of death at my place. He scares teal, flares mallards, and attracts spoonies.
As an aside, what you're describing is damn near identical to the problems we had around thanksgiving. We had birds when others didn't, but couldn't get them to finish to save our lives.

I'll be at my place starting on Friday night. We have good weather on Fri-Sun, so I have to take it while I can. Weather on Christmas week looks like dogshit.

So I take it you you can't be in Clinton Missouri Thursday morning.

I don't get to Clinton as often as I used to. I don't even know why I bought the damn farm.

I've hunted spots like that and had the same results. I knew the birds wanted to be in that hole but couldn't commit. After the initial hunt (killed 2) I waited a few days and went back with no decoys and didn't use my call. I was able to get my limit before 9. Don't know if this will be the case with your situation but it worked for me.

Well I'm no duck hunter, but I'd get in a smaller hole with less decoys and no mojo. They're probably tired of getting shot at.

I was just asking, because I will be passing through in January heading to Kansas
If you're coming through on a weekend, I can almost certainly make a hunt. I have some spots not too far out of the way when heading up to Kansas.

What time of day was it when you saw all these birds on Friday?
from sunrise to at least 30 minutes after sunrise. I left at that point so I didn't spook them.
So, those birds were likely there all night, roosting. Maybe you're hunting that spot at the wrong time. If its a roost, then you need to be there in the afternoon.

Nah. They weren't there when we came in to set up which was a good 45 minutes before shooting light. They started coming in around 15 minutes after shooting light. I'm 100% certain we were there when they wanted to be there and that we didn't push them off when setting up.

Was it cloudy, looks cloudy in your pic. Also looks still, the water is flat as a pancake.
I woulda got rid of the mojo and prayed for the best, sometimes you just gotta eat a sandwich or two and look up and have em on top of you on those kinda days. Were you eating enough sandwiches and playing grabass? Birds on cloudy days love that shite, nobody calling at em and messing em up.
Now if that was happening on a bright windy day, I would say keep calling at em like they were on a string. Especially if there is a crazy hen in the lead.

These are my thoughts based on my experience so please do take them with a grain of salt.
I do not subscribe to the more decoys, the better theory. In the marsh, I often hunt large ponds with 6-8 decoys, maybe even 3-4. After ducks have been pressured for awhile, I actually think that doing very different things than most in your area with your decoys is the best approach. I am never hunting timber though so I don't know.
Hail call at "tips and asses" only. Never call at ducks headed your way. As ducks get closer soften and shorten the notes to where you are only blowing a soft, single quack when they're in near range. In fact, if you have other species in your area besides Mallards, especially whistlers, use that. I can't say enough that a good Widgeon or Pintail whistle is probably the most effective confidence call there is. Furthermore, I think any kind of strong call when ducks are close allows them to zero in on your position, enormously increasing the scrutiny to the entire situation. Close, circling ducks need confidence and again being different is, IMO, my best friend.
Finally, be where they want to be. Being in the same hole or pond isn't enough. Put yourself exactly where you always jump them in a certain spot, hunt a crosswind if you have to.
Gotta go but I'll be back, interested to hear others' thoughts'.

So you killed a limit of democrats and they didn't fall in like they typically do and you're upset?
I've heard the same thing from many hunters this year. I suggest 6 decoys and a pale or molasses.

Lol. No. Definitely not.
We killed one limit between the 3 of us. We definitely didn't limit in democrats.

But you originally said this:
quote:
So this past Friday I found a large flooded lake bottom grown up with willows, buckbrush and lots of vegetation. It was broken up with pockets of water and beaver channels. It also had hundreds of mallards in it.
I would take that as meaning when you "found" it on Friday, the place had hundreds of mallards in it.

I thought you've always been allowed to count up to one legal limit of all the birds killed on a hunt? If that's not the case this year, I'll go amend. Not trying to pass those off as all mine, I assure you.

I was set up looking for them a couple hundred yards away around a bend. Just after daybreak I heard ducks start filing in off in the distance. I moved to investigate and found them piling into the bottom I eventually hunted on Saturday. While some may roost there, most of those ducks are coming in there early in the morning to feed.
ETA: We didnt scare any up when we were setting up. We heard a few small groups on the water and even a couple honkers that got up right at shooting light, but the vast vast majority of mallards didnt show up until about 10 minutes after shooting light.
