Man killed in apparent accidental shooting

quote:

Officials with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said an employee in his early 20s was working on a hunting rifle when it fired.

quote:

The bullet went through the wall of the small range house and struck a patron who was walking through the parking lot

Wow. That's awful. Prayers sent out to the family. Just another reminder that even experienced gun users and owners have mishaps. All you gunsmiths be careful at there.

ETA: shooting range was Hot Wells in Cypress, TX if any of you know the area. I've been to the range a couple times myself and always thought it was a well ran shop.

Very, very sad. And another reason why I avoid shooting ranges like the plague. I’m very fortunate that we have family land I can sight rifles in at.

damn. two lives ruined. Can't imagine living with that. I've noticed how some people view sheetrock walls as some sort of false protection against accidental fires. If you're in a building you might as well be in a open field because traditional walls aren't stopping shite.

Totally agree. Why didn't the employee check the gun chamber first and the magazine?

Possible jammed round? I guess we ought to wait for more details?

That really sucks....I'll say this the most unsafe gun practices I ever see are at gun ranges. I'm shocked that no one has been killed at Precision.

I saw it on the news, but didn't realize what range it was. My neighbor and I took his son and best friend to the range this weekend. We went to American Shooting Centers in George Bush Park. It was SCARY seeing all the holes in the roof on the shooting line from accidental discharges. It was my first time there and possibly last. We typically go to an outdoor place in Fulshear where you have your own individual horseshoe shaped berm. I feel much safer there with people I know around me.

True but could the bolt be removed to service the rifle? I am ready as well to hear more about it

My cousin texted me about this yesterday when it happened. Hot Wells is where I go shoot if I need to in Houston, and agree it seems like a well run shop. The deceased worked at Centerpoint where my buddy works and apparently leaves behind 5 year old triplets. Sad.

Was the rifle not pointed downrange?

The employee was working on the rifle in the range house/office. It accidentally discharged while he was working on it, went thru the trailer wall and killed a guy in the parking lot.

Working on it/cleaning it I don't know the exact details, but he had it in the shop and was doing something to it when it went off.

Ugh, so many fundamental breakdowns. If the rifle had a jam on the line, then send the range to cold and fix it while the rifle is pointed downrange. If someone brought it in, the employee obviously didn't check it at all, fail number one, and didn't have it pointed the safest direction (toward the floor), fail number two. Basic shite.

yep, exactly why I emphasised

"accidental" is impossible. The correct modifier is "negligent"

"Negligent Death"
"negligent discharge"
etc.
