Saw academy has the smith&wesson on sale the 9mm and .40. Anyone have any opinions on them. I've been looking at getting a Glock but wondering if it's worth the extra $200.

Go with the Glock or a higher end S&W

Agreed. My S&W M&P Core and compact are two excellent firearms that I trust my life to. Not sure if I would have that same confidence with a S&W SD model.

I owned one. The only way to make it sort of serviceable is to remove one of the springs from the trigger. Which by the way, is never a good idea. It's just not a good pistol. I never had trouble out of mine but it shoots like shite and is generally not well liked. And the trigger is horrendous. I sold it because I was going to all 9mm anyway and mine was a .40

What about the glock 9mm or .40. Are there any real pros/cons of the two different calibers? Also what about the compact vs subcompact.

I sold my S&W SD40VE and bought a S&W Shield .40 and I have been very please with my decision.

Shield has been through the ringer and still runs like a top. Damn thing got stolen, was on the streets for a week, and then sat in the evidence locker for 8 months and came out just fine.

I did the exact same thing but went with the S&W Shield 9mm. Best decision I've ever made. It's not a full size but I also own a Sig P226 which is my full size pistol.

It's a cheap shitty pistol. It's the only gun I've ever owned that I sold. Spend the extra money on a glock and you'll never regret your decision.

If you're on a budget, the cheapest decent pistol is going to be the Ruger for around $375

Honestly you don't have to limit yourself to only Glock to get a good gun. People here are just saying the SD is a particularly bad pistol.

Smith and Wesson, Ruger, Glock, Walther, HK, FN, etc. all make good guns. Avoid any gun that's selling below $350, in general.

9mm and 40 do pretty much the same thing but 9mm is easier to shoot and gives you a larger capacity magazine. Not to mention 9mm target ammo is much cheaper...

If you don't plan on carrying the gun, the full sized offering is preferred almost 100% of the time. Find one with a grip that fits your hand and there ya go.

The only reason the compact and subcompact pistol market exists is for concealed carry. A larger gun will almost always be easier to shoot.

Most people hate them. I'll tell you my experience.

My dad bought his SD in 1996. He has had it cleaned once in the past 20 years and it was 2 years ago, and only because it jammed for the first time since he owned it.

1 jam, in 18 years with no cleaning. He didn't even wipe a cloth down the barrel.

That being said, I can't shoot the thing. The grip has a weird set up, and the trigger pull takes somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 minutes.

That's a decent price on one, but not a great one. You can find them for less every day of the week. Especially used.

If under $250, I would buy one. But I've had a better experience with them than most.

I have one and never had any issues with mine. I did take out one of the springs which dropped the trigger pull from close to 9 lbs to about 4.4 lbs. With the lighter pull it has proved to be much more accurate. When I bought mine 8 years ago, it was on sale at academy for $249 with a $50 mail in rebate and 2 extra clips. That promotion lasted for a few months then they changed it to $50 mail in rebate or 2 clips. For what I paid, the gun has served me well for what I do with it. Now my next will be the compact m&P or shield in 9mm as a CC pistol.
