The old rule i always heard is you can have a rat but you always have mice.

Had one get in the house last month. Killed two. Haven’t had any signs since.

I have a Rat Terrier. She follows along with me as I mow right at 90 acres. She kills dozens daily as I mow. It is a sight to see. She grabs them and shakes them and then throws them in the air.

This is what I'm worried about.

It's really not something I want to deal with again. The smell of rotting flesh of any kind in a house is disgusting to live with.

I used rat poison once and having to deal with the aftermath cured me of ever using it again.

Ok I have or had a mouse problem, as I have killed probably a dozen in the past few weeks.

You're saying a rat terrier will kill mice, and I know that to be true, but do you believe they actually keep mice from coming in the house? Like are they active enough hunters to do that?

When we had cats I witnessed them eradicate a mice family, and I know they patrolled under the house. I just don't see a terrier being that active/proactive about it. Think I'm wrong?

I think the terriers will work. I have two Jack Russell/rat mixes that I keep in a large dog run/kennel. When they are out for extended periods they are active hunters. They’ll kill any critter or fight any animal no matter the size. I’m talking squirrels, mice, snakes, birds, Labradors, Boxers. The fact that they are brothers and have each other’s back means they have almost no fear. If my yard wasn’t over 6 acres and I could reasonably fence it I would love to have them available to hunt all day every day.

I had rat terriers growing up. They were hell on mice. I’ve got a blue heeler now and she is a killing machine. Mice, squirrels, moles, possums, coons, you name it. Even manages to somehow get a bird every now and then.

So yeah, snap traps with PB or get rat terrier or heeler.

I've seen that video before and I wonder just what the hell those farmers are planting in that field that draws so many rats. If it is potatoes, I don't think I'd want to eat them due to rat crap and urine permeating the soil with that amount of rats making nests.

Great bunch of dogs by the way. They make short work of those rats.

Looked like a combination of manure and silage to me.

On a side note, Ratties make a heck of a squirrel dog...

It smells, then smells bad and then gets better over time.

We have two cats and our Rat Terrier. Between the three we have no problem with mice, moles, chipmunks and squirrels at the house. The farm house is different due to not living up there all the time. While the dog is there she does a great job. When I open the farm house up the dog checks every room then makes her trip around the yard and checks everywhere. She has been sprayed by a skunk over a year ago but has learned her lesson there I hope and pray that does not happen again.
