So my back yard backs up to a big pond, wooded, field type area... every blue moon (one a year) we have a mouse show up on patio...last week this one was bold coming out in open...he somehow got inside and I trapped him in bathroom...dude dissappeard...I set up traps and he died overnight...left two out because I was lazy...just killed another in same bathroom...is there more?

Mice regularly travel in pairs. That being said I killed 3 over a 3 month period that I'm pretty sure all came in together. I'd leave out traps for 2 weeks and then call it good. Can also leave concealed poison or live traps outside to catch them before they make it inside.

Society is changing. Open relationships aren’t frowned upon anymore.

“Just one bite” rat poison is your answer. You need to keep some in the attic also as prevention. Make sure the dogs don’t get to it.

Traps are nice, but I agree. Chemical warfare is your answer. Make sure it's in bait boxes so your animals or kids don't get into it.

And if you have three dogs, what's one more? Get one of these....

What happens when the die in the attic and you can’t find them?

I have a rat in my attic that I can’t seem to get with a snap trap or glue trap.

Wild cats are your answer. My parents built a house in an old pasture out in the country. They had field mice pretty bad the first year. My mom hates cats, but finally my dad convinced her it would stop the mouse problem. You need a barn cat that you feed once a week to keep them around. Cats will go nocturnal if dogs are around. They will solve your mice problem. They will reproduce on their own. Hawks and your dogs will keep the cat population in check.

I've seen this ecosystem play out in real life for the last 15 years. Same exact situation, ponds, out in the country, mice problem, and dogs.

Think of feeding the cats like having a gigantic white oak tree in your back yard. (parents have one). The deer come right up next to the house eat the acorns at night and then go back out into the woods to live their life. Your cat will do the same. It will come out the woods to eat an easy meal but it will adapt and mice will be the main course. You might kill 1 or 2 around the house with traps, but that is only a temporary solution. Mice reproduce more quickly than cats.

Not no, but hell no. Have a rodent die and somehow get in the walls and you have to tear the wall apart to find it as it rots and stinks to high heaven for a couple weeks.

I did this in my second house and had to remove a section of sheetrock in my living room and it was NASTY dealing with the rotting rat.

I'm a firm believer in snap traps as they kill the rodent quickly and they can't get away if you tie the trap off in the off-chance the trap doesn't get them on the head/neck area.

You must set a dozen Victor snap traps. Use the older Victor brand traps and bait them with peanut butter. Also use the 1 bite poison, in bait stations so pets don't encounter it. Place it underneath home if home is elevated, place near where rats and mice are entering the home. Rats in the attic must leave and return in search for food. The one bite poison should kill them before they can return back to the attic. I do my own pest control using the products below. They work.

Here's a pet/child pet resistant station with bait.

Here's the refill bait. Has Bromethalin. Fast Kill to mice and rats.

i e always been told they will leave the attic and go looking for water as they died. I don’t know if that is true

I have kept rat poison in my attics over the years and have never had a mouse.

I just grab some every few years and pitch it around the attic. In all this time I have had one bite taken out of one.

Then, start praying that your dog doesn't find the poisoned mouse outside and decide to eat it. Poison doesn't know the difference between a mouse and a dog.

A plumber told me if you have PEX plumbing to avoid using any poison in the attic that makes them hunt for water. He said they will chew through the PEX trying to get at the water. Don't know how true it is, but thought I would mention it.
