So there I was fishing and minding my own business. Everything was nice and quiet with the occasional sound of my trolling motor mixed in. Then out of the depths of hell came the deepest, most guttural growl that I've ever heard. It was so loud that it reverberated in my chest. The hairs on my neck stood and I could tell the beast was close. Initially, I thought my time was up and Satan was coming out the swamp to collect me. It took a few growls for me to realize what it was. There was a huge arse gator right around the bend in the canal doing his mating call. I tried to troll around the bend to video him but once I got in sight he took off.

Youtube of what I'm talking about - LINK

The first growl hit me like a shockwave and I must admit a little poo may have come out.

Hearing this growl in person was terrifying and amazing.

A few years back I fished Lake Martin in my kayak an encountered numerous gators doing this, it will make your hair stand up for sure

You should trying hearing this while knee deep in the Everglades. The botanist I was with was looking for a tree to climb...

This is about what it looked like where we were at the time...

Glad I was in a boat and not in a kayak or knee-deep in the swamp.

They are out in force. The amount dead on airline hwy around the B.C. spillway is amazing. I also seen from the spillway bridge what looks to be a 12-14 footer on a sandbar between the bridge and first set of tracks

I take it you got the heck out of their on that small kayak. Ain't no way I'm anywhere gators in a kayak, especially during breeding season! Ain't happening!

Concur with your assessment.

Baw was showing out for a nearby lady to get her in the mood and to ward off other potential suitors.

Heard one do it in the back of an oxbow off of Lake Eufaula years back. I imagine thats the closest modern man can get to hearing what a dinosaur actually sounded like.

When you get close enough to hear the water splashing from their mating "shimmy" is when it REALLY gets fun.

I was close enough to hear the shimmy. He was around the bend so he couldn't see me through the woods. I was probably within 10 feet of it.

The first time I heard them was back in Silver lakes right before dark . We were going frogging. I was seriously rethinking the whole frogging thing . Between the owls , nutria and then the Bull gators chimed in . Other worldly sounds
