Upstairs unit, runs fine during the day and cools properly.

At night it runs for hours and hours and the temp increases. A/c guy thinks there is a leak but can't find anything. What the crap is going on?

That just doesn't add up. When it's not cooling, have you tried shutting it down for a few minutes, then restarting?

My leak occurred in/at the condenser in the attic. ~2K fix.

Like alx said that doesn’t make sense. The only thing that I could think of is that it’s freezing up? Is the fan still blowing? It is that would tell you that it isn’t freezing

Trust me I know it doesn't make sense.

Here is normal operation during the day. The white line is the indoor temperature. The blue block is the A/C running, the white is the fan.

Here it is running overnight. Runs all night and the temp increases to 78. Then it magically starts cooling again in the morning.

ETA: The only difference is at night the doors to the bedrooms are closed for my daughters.

Is it mildly freezing up during the day?

Not that I'm aware of.

If your evaporator coil in the unit itself freezes, the fan will still blow, but you won't get any cold air out of the vents.

I had that problem just a month or so ago. I wound up taking my unit apart enough to get to the coils and saw they were frozen solid. I took my wife's hair dryer and defrosted the thing, and that took almost an hour to get all the ice out the coils and fins. Then I saw where the coils were dirty and took one of those stiff nylon brushes and pulled all the dirt off the coils.

After putting it all back together again, it worked fine and has done so ever since.

I have double filters on my unit and change them regularly and that was only the 2nd or 3rd time I've had to clean the coils on the thing since I put it in back in 92.

This could be bad, no? Return air issue?

That doesn't starve the unit of return air feed?

I know from personal experience, if a unit starts freezing up routinely there's likely a refrigerant leak (too cold on the colds and not enough air flow to get rid of condensate so it freezes up and it enters into a constant state of freeze up and re-freeze until the coil is a block of ice) then the only thing you can do is run the fan itself with no A/C to defrost it..and you better hope your condensate pan is big and your condensate line is not plugged up.

No idea? It's cooler up there now with the unit off. It's like it's blowing warm air.

Maybe the unit is partially frozen during the day and fully freezes up at night when outside temp drops? Have you tried completely turning the unit off for a day and let it completely thaw out

Yes, it was off for an entire day last week. Worked fine for a week then back to this. I'm guessing that's why he thinks there is a leak since it keeps freezing up.

It's probably running the entire day, freezing, then thawing out at night. Shutting it off for a day let it thaw out somewhat

Apparently not since it's been like this since day 1. The pleated filter is in the return air grill and my unit is one of those in the closet type with the return air under the platform the unit sits on.

The hole cut in the bottom of the platform to allow for the return air also has one of those green coarsely woven filters that I remove and clean when I replace the filter in the RA grill.

I'm assuming your ac guy is qualified to check pressures.

I would check the outside unit at night to see if the lines are sweating and ice free. Then check the inside unit for ice too.

Oh, so it has a coarse filter and a fine filter? That makes more sense. I was confused if it had like 2 1600 filters. Mine isn't even rated for 1 1600 rated filter. I have to run 800s in mine which are fine.

He just did a 400 psi pressure check and a 250 psi vacuum check. All is well with both, appears there's no leak.

Now I'm even more confused.

Try leaving all doors open all the time.

There is no such thing as a 250 psi vacumm check ! There is a high side and low side pressure check that helps diagnose system conditions. The only reason to pull a vacumm on the System is to eliminate any moisture and contaminants and prepare for a refrigerant fill.
