Biggest question is it worth going from a cheaper Canik up another few hundred dollars to a H&K, Sig, S&W, or Glock?

If this is your first pistol just go with the Canik or the S&W 2.0 Compact. Both are excellent pistols for the money.

H&K is the best out of the box pistol you listed. It has the best sights, trigger, and in the hand feel (personal preference).

Sig has decent sights and trigger and also feels good the hand. I don't feel like the standard 320 is any better than the S&W 2.0 or Canik.

Glock is glock. It's reliable and trusted. Sights and trigger are not great, but most novice shooters won't notice. I tell most people starting out to get a G17 or G19.

You can't go wrong with any of these guns. All are great and most "gun guys" own one of each.

I love my VP9, it is a great pistol, however, since I got my Caniks, I find that the VP9 stays in the case.

If you can find it, the Canik TP9SF One Series can be had brand new for less than $300. I had a TP9SFx, and when they released the One Series, I bought one of the TP9SF as well. The value is hard to beat.

PSA has a great deal going right now on the S&W Shield.

I've carried SIGs for years, literally decades, and I love them. I started carrying years ago in the early 90s .... a P226 in 9mm. Then I moved up in 2012 to a P229 DAK SAS in SIG 357. Love it.

I own a bunch of pistols but I have my favorites.

For the past year I've been carrying a little ole S&W Shield in 9mm. I shoot it a lot, it is dead nuts accurate and very reliable. I have two now actually, both without safeties. Took about 500 rounds through each to break them in really good. My Son carries one, it was his first pistol he got it on his 21st birthday. My wife carries one in her purse and now my Brother in Law carries one and his shooting improved by leaps and bounds. He had been carrying a Ruger LCP for years and couldn't hit the broadside of the barn with it.

I spent two hours with him and he was grouping the 9 circle at 7 yards like butter. That's excellent at his age, he's a year older than am I.

Try a S&W Shield. It's affordable and it checks all the other boxes.

It's not high cap. It comes with a 7 rounder and an 8 rounder. If you have big hands you can get a pack of mag extensions off of Amazon for less than ten bucks. You can also get a slipover Hogue grip for around ten bucks if you feel the need. I put one on my waist carry piece but not on my pocket carry piece. It does add a little thickness to the grips.

Zastava CZ999

It's pretty much a SIG 226 for about $300. I love mine. Never failed me before. Build quality is excellent. It's a Yugoslavian military and police side arm. Zastava has been making guns longer than Glock.

out of stock but a look

Academy has a tan Canik one that looked pretty good for 300. I definitely liked the full size pistol and not a concealed size.

I have a couple of CZ99s and they are awesome, especially at the old price we used to pay for them.

Good luck finding one at $300 these days. More like $500. DK has them now at $499 and when Bud's gets their next pallet-in theirs will be $489.00.

Still a super sidearm for the money. CZ makes great guns.

Why would y’all recommend a subcompact for home defense and carrying on a four wheeler?

Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

He would likely be better off with a full size weapon.

The Canik TP9SF One series is on sale at grabagun.com for $279. It comes with one mag and Warren sights. I have the original TP9SF and I love it. Trigger is great, reset very fast, and groups excellent.

Think I’ve narrowed it down to M&P 2.0 compact or Canik. I’m going to see which one feels better.

For your needs, I'd suggest a full size 9mm w/ double stack magazine, e.g. Glock 19 and others. While I don't have most of the guns mentioned so far, I do have a Canik TP9 SF. I'v been very pleased w/ mine. It's my "truck gun." I've got prolly 300 rounds through it. I've had 4 failure to feeds; one was this past weekend while the others were in the first hundred rounds or so. I was shooting up odds and ends ammo this week so the FTF may've been ammo related. I just don't remember the details. Nevertheless, I feel mine's generally reliable. In addition, it's probably my most accurate handgun. This weekend it put 18 shots of FMJ ammo at 7 yards into a pretty tight area (at least it's a tight area for me). Although I endorse the Canik, I'd avoid the TP 9 SA, the model w/ the decocker switch. I don't think a decocker switch on a single action gun makes sense.

I have a metric shite ton of glocks but it’s hard to beat a mp 2.0 at its current price under $400. Having the flexibility to get a manual safety is nice benefit too.

You're right about the prices being higher now that I did some shopping. It's not a CZ, the "CZ" is part of the model. It's a Zastava. It's now being called an EZ9 after doing some research. I'd still keep an eye open for one since it seems to fit the bill of the OP but only if it can be found closer to $300

And that price includes night sights.
