I’m looking to purchase a 9mm for home defense and carrying when riding utv. I’m not really familiar with pistols and debating whether I should spend 600 bucks or would a 300 dollar Canik work just as well? I tried a VP9 and Glock 19 and defiantly liked the feel of the VP9.

Give the M&P 2.0 Compact a try too. I think it's better than the Glock 19 (which I've had for over a decade).
Also, you've got the single stack Glock 43X and Glock 48.

You can get an M&P 2.0 Compact for $400 with night sights and 3 mags.

Lots and lots of choices. Do you want a manual safety? Is the firearm going to be subjected to dirt and grime? I'd spend no more than $450 for what's essentially a truck gun and for that amount there's a ton of good options, especially used. I love my VP9 and my PPQ. Canik is a good pistol for the money. Go shoot with your buddies' guns and see what feels good, aims good and shoots good.

Bass pro has a smith and Wesson shield listed for 250$ starting on Friday. Not sure how many they will have at that price but for that kind of money I’m not sure there is a better buy.

What other than Canik is out there for less than 450 that’s decent quality? It seems like you have to step up to 600 to get to the next level.

M&P 2.0 Compact. I got mine for $330 with night sights from Smoky Mountain Guns.

Glock 43X and 48 are right under $450 too.

I think I want a pistol the size of the VP9, is the shield that size?

No, shield is a compact.

Wouldn't the Shield be a subcompact?
The VP9 looks almost like a Glock 17 full size.

Why would y’all recommend a subcompact for home defense and carrying on a four wheeler?

Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

He would likely be better off with a full size weapon.

A VP9 is the same size as a Glock 19, ie mid-size

OP, I have no experience with the Canik but have read it’s a great weapon.

Consider a Glock 17 or 34, S&W M&P, SIG P320 full size, FNH FNS-9, FNH 509, CZ 75 SP-01, Walther PPQ

This just a few. There are many that fit. Go see how they feel in the hand.

Yeah I misspoke, shield would be subcompact.
A quick google says vp9 is a 4in barrel and the glock 19 is also a 4in barrel and the glock 17 is 4.5 barrel.
I have never shot a vp9 but for ease of carrying all day I prefer a shorter lighter gun, for shooting longer sight plane and heavier is better.
OP will learn he will need 8-10 at least with at least double the amount of holsters only to tragically lose them all in a boating accident..

The VP9 looks like a 19X (17 frame with 19 slide/barrel).

It’s not. It’s the same size as the Glock 19

Mid-size

I just bought a Walther PPQ. Try that trigger out. It’s damn smooth.

I was suggesting it based mainly on the price point and the fact that the OP was asking about not breaking the bank for a gun that will be used either sitting on a nightstand or riding around getting dusty.
Riding a SxS he’s not going to be sneaking up on any wildlife and it then just becomes a matter of comfort and ease of carry at that point.

There’s so many choices out there. Like others have said, try other pistols out first and see what you like the best. I’ve got Glocks and Sigs and love them both. If I had to choose, I’d go Glock. Try looking at Aimsurplus.com, they always have really good deals on Law Enforcement trade ins. They had G17’s awhile back and were priced right. Important thing is to be comfortable and confident in whatever you get.

Another option might be a revolver, like a Judge or something along those lines. Good luck though. Guns are great.

P365 XL

I would not fret over trying to save a couple hundred dollars for an item that you will keep for a very very long time.

Right there. 43x and 48 are subcompacts

And the 19 and VP9 are the same size. I have both. The VP9 May be .5” longer but it’s to the to angle of the grip.
