Obviously all models of outboard motors have occasional problems...
Have you or a friend experienced lower unit problems on a Yammie 90 hp that seemed unusual?

Only problem we've had we brought on ourselves. Other than that it's been fine since '06.

Thanks for the replies..
Langston, I don't have one... just boat shopping and a lot my prospects have Yamaha 90's on them, and someone had mentioned that he had heard some lower unit issues on this motor... so I was just asking...
Looks like good news so far in this thread.

I will be perfectly honest. I abused my motor by regularly running rpms too high with a prop that was too small and never even serviced my lower for several years. It was flawless. Good luck with the search.

I've only had my 90 Yammy for 2 summers. It's a late 80's model but with a new powerhead and 2008 lower unit. I haven't had any issues with the motor(that I didn't self inflict out of stupidity) and have heard nothing but good about how well built this motor is.
Clean it, Flush it, Maintain it and it'll last you a loooooong time!

We've run the 90 Yamahas on some of our work boats (where they really seem to get abused) and they hold up well.
One of the dealers we use to service our outboards (Yamaha & Mercury warranty center) does say that the lower units on the mid-range Mercs are stronger than those on the mid-range Yamahas. But if the one you're looking at hasn't been abused, it should be fine.

Note to self, never ever buy a used boat from Langston...
