A lot of this also depends on where you are hunting. For hunting around the south east where we have thick woods, having a blood train becomes important and for that reason I’d recommend the Barnes 115 tac. You will get a pass through with great expansion and damage.

Hunting out in more open fields and the hornady SST is deadly. It liquifies the insides upon contact, but not great for leaving blood. However if you do you part, that deer is 100% dying with that bullet.

For those reason, I like the Barnes for deer because I take that tradition shot. and the hornady for hogs when I’m pretty much taking head/neck shots

No pass through, zero blood trail. My dad has one & he has lost every animal he has ever shot with it. He was shooting hornady sst which is great ammo.

Your dad doesn’t know how to shoot then.

And SST is a ballistic tip which tends to not exit. Some people like them others like pass throughs.

Any suggestions on where to purchase?

Also what is an effective range to kill a 150 pound deer with good shot placement? Where I hunt in the mountains I can’t see over a 200 yard shot being likely. And I like the AR platform due to its size and weight. I’m shooting a Bear Creek upper with an 18” barrel and currently shooting Hornady Black ELD

I’ve killed dozens of deer and hogs with my Grendel. Never wounded an animal. Most shots have exit wounds, except a few 250+ lbs boars that I shot in their shields rather than taking neck shots.

I’ve never shot factory Hornady loads at animals through. Actually couldn’t get SSTs to group.

I’ve tried Nosler BTs, Sierra Pro Hunters, and Barnes TTSX. I prefer the ones with plastic tips as they don’t get beat up when chambering the rounds.

This round is really good for whitetail deer less than 200 lbs and broadside shots. If you plan to take quartering shots on large deer, go with something like a 308.

I reload 123 grain ELD-M for a 22 inch Grendel for the kids. Muzzle velocity is around 2,650 fps. So far, it’s been a great round. Killed 8 whitetail and 9 pigs last year. A couple weren’t the best shots (a little far back), but the animal only ran less than 100 yards, and we were able to track blood and finish it off with another shot. The shots that were placed correctly resulted in DRT kills or maybe 20-30 yard runs.

I agree with this 100%

Every deer I have ever shot with SST ammo has been a pass through. Granted I was using my 308 & 7mm08 which have way more punch than the grendel.

Precision Firearms has 6.5 grendel ammo on sale right now. I've ordered from them before and have been pleased. Several different options available right now.

I'm firmly in this camp. I'll pass on the bang flops and take absolute reliability. I'm not a fan of hunting with match bullets even with there being great success had out west with them. I want to be able to shoot a deer in his arse and know it's going to come out of his chest if I have to. Match bullets give you excellent performance on broadside shots, but they aren't going to give multiple feet of straight penetration.

If I had a Grendel, I'd be hunting with regular cup and core soft point ammo, 125gr ish.

Rivertown munitions
They have them on sale right now too. 29.99 is a great price. I recently bought 10 boxes from them and can recommend.

My Grendel in on a 20 inch odin works DMR barrel. I think the 18-20 inch barrels are the optimal length.

JBM ballistics has this bullet in their data base

Barnes has said this bullet gets reliable expansion down to 1800 fps, and on the box they suggest keeping shots within 300 yds. That lines up with the JBM graphic.

I had read reports that seemed to indicate more pass throughs with ELD-M vs SST with the 6.5 Grendel… so I brought it up for discussion. I’m glad I did because it sounds like it’s only marginally better for a pass through vs the SST in the Grendel.

I feel the same way but haven’t come across anything.

Accubond LR has some good reports though, and it will likely be a better alternative.

I dont know that there is any difference between the SST and ELDM other than the shape. From what I've read they are built the same.

If its just for deer I'm sure either one will work fine. They should both expand reliably. Not exiting is really not that big of a deal if you take good shots. It's easy to argue that leaving all the energy in the deer is desirable, and doing it with multiple wound channels is even better.

Get whatever tickles your pickle and shoot deer with it. Stick to good shots until you know how they'll work. I've used Serbian 139gr soft points at 2500ish fps for a few deer with no problems.

6.5 Grendel in my experience is a terrible choice for whitetail. Maybe for pigs, but only because wounding them & having them run off & die is completely acceptable for a pig.

It’s a .264 round. It’s fine for whitetail. But you are right, there are much better rounds out there for hunting and I would never buy a Grendel just for hunting.

Disclaimer: I've never shot a deer w/ a 6.5 Grendel. OTOH, I've killed close to 30 deer w/ 120 gr bullets in a 6.5 JDJ handgun w/ a 14" barrel that duplicates the Grendel's velocity. All performed well w/ deep penetration on all deer. All but a few were killed w/ the 120 gr Nosler BT, my first choice for you. I know a lot of folks will read that and say, "The BT is too fragile. It'll blow up." That might be true at high velocity, but at the modest velocities of the JDJ and the Grendel, the NBT is the best bullet to use. It's the preferred 6.5mm hunting bullet of many other handgun hunters, as well. From my personal experience (or that of other handgun hunters), other bullets I'd feel good about in the Grendel's MV window are : Sierra 120 gr Pro Hunter, Speer Gold Dot 120 gr and Nosler Partition 125 gr. My group of "first runner ups" would include: 100/115 gr TTSX and 100 gr Nosler Partition. A friend of mine swears by the 123 gr SST in his 16" barreled AR. I don't use match bullets in hunting situations. Sometimes they work good, but sometimes the don't. There are too many good 6.5mm hunting bullets to instead use a match bullet.

So… pass throughs with decent exit?

That's what I use in my grendel. 120 gr nosler bt.
Only killed 1 deer so far, but it barely made it out the food plot before piling up. I own lots of calibers but it's probably my favorite to shoot, especially suppressed.

I’m pretty excited about this too. I bought it for kids to use, but I have a feeling I’m going to enjoy testing out bullets.

I don't care how many deer "drop right there", I'm not using a round that doesn't exist most of the time.

Especially for kids, I want a good blood trail over immediate terminal ballistics

Exactly, and where I mainly hunt, if a deer only takes 30 steps without any blood, you’re going to be very lucky if you find them.
