I have a 40! merc 4 stroke (2 years old) and all of a sudden it won’t get up to but 4200 rpm in gear and will not bet up on full plane. I put it in neutral and it would red line if I would let it.

The foot has been in the lake water for several months when I forgot to raise it up out of the water the last time I used it.

Everything looks fine externally.

Any ideas?

Thanks

May be starved for fuel? Is your hose pinched? May be starved for air?

Thanks. When I put it in neutral and throttled it it came up to full rpm so I figured it was getting the right amount of fuel/air

Fuel pump or carb needs cleaning?

I attribute every problem on my boat to fuel pump or carb needing cleaning

High speed jet is plugged more than likely. May be able to just spray some carb cleaner or run some Techron through it to clean up if not pull carbs and clean.

Get a small fuel tank and run some seafoam through it.

it's most likely fuel injected being 2 years old

This really won't tell you much. Motor needs to be under a load to figure out what is going on.

Are you running non ethanol? If you aren’t I guarantee you your carbs need a thorough cleaning

I had a similar issue with a newer smaller 4 stroke, never had a drop of ethanol in it, and people here told me it might be not trimmed out correctly. I have yet to fix it on mine, haven't been back out yet with that motor, so I can't tell you if that worked. But it's probably something to consider before you start taking things apart.

Run Non-ethanol fuel only with Seafoam in every gallon. After use, disconnect fuel line and run engine until it dies. Then there is no fuel left in engine/fuel lines to turn bad when setting up. The Walmart branded version of Seafoam is just as good and cheaper.
