I have a 4 year old mutt who was literally the sweetest dog I've ever been around, up until two weeks ago. Nothing in her environment has changed at all, and she doesn't seem to be hurt or sick, but shes just started being aggressive towards everyone except for my wife and me.
Any ideas why she could be acting this way?
Any ideas how to deal with this behavior?

Maybe a hormonal issue. Is she spayed? Maybe a trip to the vet for a check up.

A thorough vet check is in order. Could be hormonal or metabolic, she could be in pain. Just manage the situation (keep her away from others) until you can determine whether this is medical or strictly behavioral.

Love her unconditionally but try some obedience stuff. If she bites someone euthanize her. Nobody wants or wants to deal with a mean assed dog.

Just took my four year old English bulldog for a ride on the long black train. I made every excuse for her these last four years... she has bitten 8 people and made three dogs bleed it was time. Hardest thing I have ever done.

Dang dude. That sounds tough.

So 8 people was the limit?

Did the behavior change happen before or after July 4th? Fireworks can do weird things to dogs, even when they've seemed unfazed by them previously

I have an old very country uncle who would tell you that the dog has a tick on it somewhere.

Like I said always made an excuse for her. Whether it be they shouldn’t have gotten in her space etc. never bit a person hard enough to need medical attention but she was a liability. Paid a fortune for that damn dog and at times she was great then a switch would flip and she could get down right terrifying. Very unpredictable what would set her off when it came to other dogs or people.

It may have first started a day or two after the 4th. But shes 4 years old. It wasnt her first rodeo with fireworks. Hell, we set some off last year for the 4th in our drive way, and she was fine until a week or two ago.

Whats strange to me is that shes still so meek around my wife and me, that when i walk up to pet her, she still squats and pees a little

My wife is about 8-1/2 months pregnant, so That may have something to do with it, but her aggressiveness isnt taking place when someone approaches my wife or anything like that.

My smaller, older dog used to be the more aggressive one. He would bark at people when they came to the house until i came outside, then he would stop, while she would literally go hide in her cage until the barking stopped. Its like they switched roles, the smaller older one is more chill now than ever, and the bigger younger one is the aggressor.

So, I assume this is generalized aggression and not food or space aggression?

I wouldn't rule out fireworks as a trauma. Despite prior good experience, most dogs just plain don't like them, even gun trained dogs.

(ETA: And she could be picking up the older dog's slack, feeling she needs to be the more protective dog now.)

I’ve heard of dogs behavior changing during a pregnancy. Not sure if that’s the case here, though.

My lab's only concern with a 12 gauge blast is where is the bird but she doesn't care for fireworks....she doesn't mind them in the immediate area but from a distance she notices them...she doesn't react but her ears go up and she looks toward the sound. I have thought it may be hearing and actually feeling the percussion of a shotgun blast compared to just hearing the fireworks that is the difference.

My wife sent me something just before the 4th about the number of dogs that go missing on the 4th due to fireworks...they run off and either get run over or lost or picked up whatever but lots go missing apparently. Fireworks and thunder are hard on some dogs.

When our son was born (our first) the nurses suggested I take home a blanket that they had used to swaddle him in and let our little mongrel mutt from the pound have it to get used to his scent before he came home. I did it and that dog took that blanket, went to the nursery we had wallpapered and painted and prepared...and proceeded to try to destroy that blanket and then took a dump on it! That dog never shat in the house but it did on that blanket LOL...there is no doubt dogs know when something is changing in the home....they are incredibly intuitive.

Had to recently get rid of our 7 year old Westie. Became aggressive and bit a couple of folks. Was never overly aggressive prior to about two years ago.

Im gonna be working from home for the next couple weeks until the baby comes, so im going to put a shock collar on her and keep the remote on me. Everytime i hear her acting up towards the mail man passing, golf carts riding down the road, or anyone walking, im going to light her up. Hopefully that will discourage her from being so aggressive. Im just glad she never tries to go past her electric boundary. She tried once about a year ago when we put the system in, and it zapped the piss out of her and she never tried it again.

I don’t know if your shock collar method is the way to go, unless she’s already collar conditioned. She needs to understand the shock she’s getting is coming from you and not just some random blast of electricity. If she isn’t collar conditioned, this is probably just going to confuse the hell out of her and may even make her more aggressive just out of fear. As the dogs owner you really need to understand how the collar works in a dogs mind to be an effective training tool before using it. Just my two cents

Oh damn. Mine will bark uncontrollably at the FedEx truck going past our front yard and then chase it down nearly 900 feet of fence as it turns and drives down the main road. And we're three houses away from said main road. I never thought of it as anything more than a dog being a dog.

She's got a bark collar, but she's figured out that it won't kill her and just shrugs it off, so unless the shock collar can damn near electrocute your dog, it might not work.

Sounds like she's a typical bitch.
