I have a 7 mag and a 300 ultra mag but that is too much gun for down here IMO. I hunt just north of Waterproof and we do have some open terrain but only a few times have I had to make a shot 250 plus. Most of the shots I end up taking is between 20- 200yds. My dad and older brother love there .270s but my younger brother hunts only with his .308

Thoughts, opinions, suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I hunt with a .308 and I love it. Sometimes it doesn't pass all the way through. I am considering getting a .300 wsm soon.

Either are great calibers. .270 will be a flatter shooting bullet at longer ranges. I shoot a .308, my hunting buddy shoots a .270. difference at the ranges you are talking would be negligible. Ammo is plentiful for both, local off the shelf options would probably depend on whats in favor in your area.

.308 it’s what the snipers used.

Both are perfectly fine for what you want to do. I suggest going with the .308 in a smaller lighter package.

What grain do you shoot? If I get a .308 I plan on shooting a 125gr

I shoot a 150gr hornady superperformance sst. It does done the trick for me. Never rad one run more than 75 yards and he was gut shot. Its a little faster than a traditional 150 gr so it drops a couple inches less at 300 yds and a never shot much further than that.

Then get a .270 and shoot 130gr bullets.

You don't necessarily need a new cartridge. Try a different bullet in your 308. Perhaps a nosler partition, or federal fusion.

Its all about bullet construction. If a bullet fired from a 308 doesn't pass through, the same bullet coming from a 300 mag will only shatter faster.

Four Leaf, I’ll differ with you on too much gun with the 7 mag and the Ultra. Right now, I’ve got a 300 WBY pointed down a 600 yard lane. It’s for the trajectory, not killing power.

I’ve had extensive experience with both the .308 and .270. Since you already have long range rifles, you want the .308. It comes in a short action, allowing you to have a more compact, handy rifle for the short range hunting you described. Also, you can get a heavier bullet in the .308. I believe the .308 Win is the best all around Southern deer hunting caliber there is.

i shoot the fusions now with meh results. I was shooting the winchester wild boar bullets and they hardly expanded through a deer.

Agree with most of the peeps above.

308 would be my choice. Tons of factory ammo with unlimited bullet choices.

If you want to reload there are endless combinations available online.

270 is great, I have one, but would choose a 308 without hesitation if given the option.

Either one. I like the .270 with 150gr bullets.

I don't think you can go wrong with either option.

Short action: .308

Long action: .270

Either is fantastically adequate with piles of deer killed at those ranges by each.

Past 300 you'll start to get noticeably more drop out of the .308, but inside 250 it'll be very negligible depending on the load.

If you've got a few long actions, go with the short action .308 as others have said, for a more compact easier handling gun.

Is this the best round to fire from the .308 (150gr hornady)? The reason I said I’d choose the 125gr is just in case I needed something with a little more zip on it in a rare situation that I have a deer I want to take that’s 250+ yds

.308

If you decide on a .270, get a pair of tennis shoes to track your deer with. I do not like a 270. Had to help too many folks "find" deer with those guns.

Only on the OB is the .243 a whitetail deathray and the .270 not adequate.

.270 is a fantastic deer caliber and with the right bullets works for elk as well.
