I know there is a ton of info online if you know exactly what you are searching for but I’m a little stuck on trying to do a simple 300 win mag build. Nothing too crazy just a fluted barrel and a Remington model 700 platform. Anyone know where to get a fluted barrel from? Seems like everywhere I check is basically just gunsmiths all over the US that seem to be pretty complex when ordering these. You can’t just find the one you want and add to cart. Any recommendations for a first time rifle builder?

I’ve built 2 AR’s but the bolt action rifle world is another ball game.

Also, I’m not a precision shooter, I am a deer hunter so I’m not looking for all the flare and weight that comes with some of these elaborate, tactical precision rifles to shoot steel with.

Most barrel mfrs will cut & thread for your action. Look at Shilen, Lilja, Bartlein. You can buy from their websites, but also will answer the phone and discuss things with you. Some rifle mfrs like Proof and Christensen sell precut barrels for rem 700 receivers (steel or carbon). I would still take it to a smith for assembly and indexing. They will check everything with headspace gauges to make sure everything is G2G.

You should look up/call NULA. IMO melvin forbes builds the ultimate "custom" hunting rifle.

If you could, it wouldn't be custom! At minimum you'll need to pick up the phone to order a custom setup. For what you're looking to do, there's lots of off the shelf rifles out there that fit your criteria as well. Sounds like you just want a really nice .300 with a fluted barrel

Custom rifles are for people who want particular things. It doesn’t sound like you’re real particular about this rifle. Plenty of quality rifles being mass produced now. That might serve you better.

Are you looking to build this yourself?

Do you already have your action?
Will your hunting be in a stand or are you looking for a light weight gun that you can easily carry for hunting out west?

Are you building yourself? If you have the go and no go gages it is very easy to build yourself if you have gone with the proper components.
Remington fit barrel are fit by the shoulder of the barrel. Savage sets it’s headspace by a barrel nut.
There is also a Remage. It’s the Remington thread but uses a barrel nut like the savage.

My 1st build was on a Bighorn Origin which is the Remington footprint but Savage barrel thread.

Also, you’ll need to determine what barrel taper you want and barrel length.

To help, call and talk to Jim at Northland Shooters Supply. He’s extremely helpful. He has barrels, actions, triggers, gages etc.

This is what I have for a .300WM. It started as a Christensen Arms but I’ve modified since then and it’s a shooter. It’s a .25MOA rifle shooting a 215berger hybrid.

Christensen Stock
TriggerTech Diamond Trigger (highly recommend)
Proof Research Barrel 26” (the next barrel will be a 22” Bartlein bc I want to run it full time suppressed). They’ll cut and flute your barrel.
Muzzle Break
Nightforce NX8 2.5-20

I like the Douglas Air Gauged line. But as stated above there are a lot of good barrel manufacturers out there! I recommend 26” to get good reliable burn

If you want to build it yourself, get a 700 action and a REMAGE barrel. There are several companies that offer them. One that offers a huge array of barrel options for around $400 as well as receivers is Northland Shooting Supply. LINK / They come in almost an endless offering of calibers, materials, contours, muzzle threads, fluting, etc. I built a 308 using a blueprinted stainless action for about $700. That is barrel, action and nut only. I already had a trigger tech diamond trigger tech and HS PrecisioN stock laying around. It’s an absolute bug killer. At 200 yards will frequently shoot clover leafs.

You can get about any barrel threaded using the REMAGE system. It’s basically just threaded to the 700 receiver, but uses a jam nut to lock it in place to set the headspace. Anyone can do it. All you need is a decent vice , headspace gauges, nut wrench, torque wrench.
Many of the long range competition guys use this so they don’t have to keep going to gunsmiths every time they want to change a barrel.
It’s a fun, interesting and very cost effective way to build a rifle that in the past you had to pay a high dollar gunsmith for.

Here’s some information that may help with your build decision making. Barrel fluting is purely cosmetic and looks cool. Fluting will add $125 to the barrel cost and only reduces the rifle (barrel) weight by approx. 4 ounces. Those weight savings can easily be made up on lightweight ring & bases, and scope options. If you're deadest on a fluted barrel, then build exactly what you want.

I just searched and found a #4 Wilson Rifle barrel, fluted, chambered, Remage fit with nut, drop-in ready for $500, ...- $120 w/out flutes. Lead time is 3-8 weeks.

I highly suggest having the factory action and bolt trued & blueprinted. Cost is around $195. Below are before and after pics. Installing precision cut barrel threads into a sloppy cut , rusty action threads is not good for accuracy. Let me know if you need more help as I’ll provide you with contact information.

Factory 700 action / barrel threads. Honestly, they all look like this, some much worse

Horrible chatter and slop ... ZERO quality control by Remington

Threads single point cut concentric & perfectly true with bore axis. Action face squared and trued

Precision cut barrel threads

Remage pre-fit
