Thinking about purchasing a 35 Whelen. I know the obvious answer is to buy both but Im torn between the 2. Looking for some input from the hunt masters of the OB

Are you buying .35 Whelen for primitive season or you have whittled down your choice to .30-30 or .35 whelen?

Kinda both. I like that CVA Scout but if my 30 30 is equel in knockdown I may pass. Shots are 100 yds and closer

100 yds and closer you cant go wrong with either. As you know the whelen gives you the flexibility to use all gun season. Im extremely partial to the .30-30 because Ive killed more deer with it than .270. Ammo is cheaper/easier to find in .30-30 etc. However as you probably also know there is no comparison to ballistics in those two.

Im jealous you are buying a gun and Im not

the 35 will allow you to hunt primitive season the 30-30 won't.

So ballistically the 35 is superior?

Vastly. Look at the energy that .35 whelen produces. Buddy of mine lent his out to a kid a few yrs ago and he dropped a doe at 265 yds. I know you aren't shooting that far now but you may one day.

I cant remember the last time I shot more than once but I would burn that barrel red hot at a doe when I was 14 using the .30-30 marlin

Here’s a good rescource .30-30

35 whelen

I want to go boom and pick up the deer. Im looking for knockdown power. So maybe I should get the 35?

I don't know any reason why one would buy a 30-30 anymore.

Split the difference and get a .35 Remington

A lot of that has to do with shot placement. That said, have you thought about a 45-70?

1+. Having said that, the 35 Whelen is vastly superior to the 30-30 from a ballistic standpoint. OTOH: its ammo is more expensive; ammo is more difficult to find; Whelen has much more recoil; at ranges of 100 yards and less, the Whelen's not gonna kill a deer any more dead than does the Whelen.

Because of all the other options out there that come with ammunition using superior bullet designs. Plus, the rifle model options.

If this is your primary consideration then there is no comparison. The 35 is a sledgehammer that can reach out to 200 yards. 30-30 isn’t even in the same ballpark.

.35 Whelen is essentially a .35-06. The .30-06 case throat was opened up to take a .35 caliber bullet. This means much more powder for the .35 Whelen vs the .30-30.
Unless you just like to play with various calibers, there’s no reason to buy a .30-30 anymore.

Well I went and looked....still didn't "pull the trigger". After reading these comments, Ill prolly go ahead and get the 35. Never considered a 45-70...should I? Also what mid range scope?
