The 30/30 was originally a black powder cartridge.

Actually, it wasn't. It was always a smokeless powder cartridge.

Like I said, if you'd actually read...

I did read. You said it's only effective to 150 yards or so... Which is ridiculous.

And, saying it's fine as long as you know it's limitations can be said for literally any rifle caliber out there.

Not too worried about recoil

Than a single shot .35 whelen is by far the most practical choice.

I believe it was the first that was designed around smokeless powder.

The drop at 300 is 26 inches. At 400 it is 64 inches

Without laser rangefinders and compensating scopes this shot is impossible. With them it is irresponsible

This story proves the point of the inadequacy of the round.

I mainly say that because if sighted at 100yds a round nose 150 gr bullet at 200yds drops almost 8"

That's outside of the breadbox for pretty much all deer.

I have never researched the hornady lever revolutions. I understand that they are better but I haven't looked.

They have a much better trajectory but in my experience piss poor terminal performance. You're better off shooting old school stuff and knowing where to hold.

What brand/grain cartridge?

Like any rifle it will take some trial and error to see what groups the best, but as a first box I'd go with hornady superformance. They're 200gr, relatively easy to find and not too expensive, and have grouped well enough between three 35s I've sighted in. From there you can branch out, some swear by 180gr barnes, but my gun drives tacks with 225gr federal premium bonded bearclaws.

I agree with you 100 percent. But I also believe there aren’t that many people who should be shooting at deer at 400 yards with ANY rifle.

But again, why is the round inadequate? Just because you shouldn’t use it at 300 yards means you shouldn’t use it? Within the ranges it was meant to be used, 0-120 or 130 yards, which also happens to be the range most whitetail deer are shot, it kills deer perfectly. If you expect to shoot 200-300 yards you need more rifle. If you expect to shoot 400 yards you need to get closer. (My opinion)

Did anyone say it was inadequate? Who said it shouldn't be used?

Yes actually. The poster I was replying to said it was inadequate. And you said it was irrelevant, but never stated why it was irrelevant. Most deer are shot well within the range that the 30-30 easily hits and kills them without rangefinders. That makes it still relevant.

That post was in response to a post about a shot over 300 yards.
