Anything a .45-70 can do, a .35 Whelen can do better. Only exception would be Griz and Cape buffalo.

Also what mid range scope?

I agree with 35 whelen over 30-30. The whelen is a beast. My setup is a TC Encore 35 whelen 28” fluted barrel with a Meopta Meopro 3-9x40. The scope is on sale right now on sportoptics for $350. I love my gun and scope and regularly switch between it and my bolt gun all through rifle season. It doesn’t feel “primitive” at all.

CVA makes a scout v2 in 35 remington. If I can ever find one in stock I'm prolly buying one. I have one in .44 mag and love it. Check them out.

Love my 35 whelen . If you hit the deer , it's going down . Keep nose bridge away from scope , big recoil . Have a scar to prove it .

I have to ask, why is the decision between these two cartridges?

The 30-30 is a short to medium range deer hunting cartridge that's not legal for primitive weapons season in Louisiana.

The 35 whelen is a quite powerful medium range class 3 game cartridge.

The two are very different and not nearly in the same class. Just wondering why you narrowed your selection down to these two.

On a side note, does anyone else think it kind of ironic that the 35 whelen is legal for "primitive" use and not the 30-30?

.35 Whelen hands down. I shoot 220 Grain partition handloads and they are absolutely nasty.

I don't believe you know this little about rifle cartridges and rifle designs.

I want to go boom and pick up the deer. Im looking for knockdown power. So maybe I should get the 35?

There's absolutely no caliber that will guarantee a DRT. That is up to you and where you place the bullet.

For 100 yards and in, either one will do fine. Like others have said, if you want to use the gun for primitive season also, you'll need the 35.

Yes. Very Ironic. The only thing "primitive" about it, is the fact that the rifle is an exposed hammer, breech loader.

Other than that, you may as well be shooting a 30-06.

Idk why you hate the 30-30 so much. Especially someone who only bow hunts for deer. A 30-30 can kill a deer at several times farther than you can with a bow. So, if a hunter only needs to shoot 120 yards or less, he is not in any way handicapped by a 30-30.

This, It is like he wanted to make sure he considered the worst rounds only. Is it out of a sense of fairness to the deer?

It's not that I hate it, it's that it has become irrelevant. Do I really need to address the why? hell, I own one and killed my first deer ever with one.

Good grief I hope so

It's ability to kill deer has never been in question.

Almost any center fire caliber easily kills deer.
