Right now, doing some PR work (Glorified sales work) for a regional company. Before that I was a "government liaison" for an international company. I have taught school, been a caretaker for a lodge, iditarod handler, provided "entertainment" to clubs, sold cars, been the division mgr of a small ship cruise line, tour guide, fishing/hunting guide, gold prospector...and a few other things.

so when its time to take off for a year, you just say, "thanks for the opportunity but i'm going to dick off for a year." ?

Lots of jobs are "seasonal" or give you a chunk of time off if you want it.
I know a lot of folks who work a few months out of the year and make a good living. Commercial fishermen, tourism business owners, etc.
My favorite job was with the cruise line I worked for where I got 3 months off a year. It was awesome.

I expected a bit more blue colar work.

Yeah, I spent a lot of time "evaluating" excursions. One of the dumbest things I have ever done was leaving that job.

Yeah, I got to travel to Denali, Glacier Bay, Kenai, etc....just to evaluate tour products. Worked with some impressive people too, really miss it sometimes.

Yeah, when I look at teachers schedules and see the holidays and summers off I get very jealous. I think I'd even like to teach.
Then I think about the little punk kids I'd have in my class and realize it wouldn't work.

I decided not to pursue a career in education (I have a degree in sec. education) to work for Cruise West. Probably didn't pay as well, but was infinitely more fun.

Why would it be considered so dangerous?
North of Baton Rouge it probably won't be so bad. Once you get to Baton Rouge you will have to deal with ships.South of Venice you will have to deal with ships, barges, offshore supply boats, crew boats, tugs, etc and possibly a lot of fog. It can be done you would just have to be careful and try to avoid the ships. Ship suction waves sometimes can be 6-8ft tall (breaking type waves) near the shore and I sure wouldn't want to face it in a yak.

Over the summer I saw an entire oak tree floating down the river. A whole fricking huge arse live oak going about 5mph. Now what do you do when you're in your yak paddling along and you get hit by a damn oak tree?????
