It's the Columbia.
People kayak the Taku and Copper Rivers around here, it's a pretty popular sport. Some people even do whitewater kayaking, which is a bit much for me. I'll take a raft.

I work on tugs on the river and met a guy back in April who came all the way from Minnesota. Took him 8 months to get to donaldsonville and he did it on a paddle board.

That would be an awesome trip but I would have to spend more of it on my arse than feet or knees.

Camp out where they can. From headwaters to gulf is a popular trip for canoers and yakers.

You pull over and camp, or stay in town. I know a few folks who have yakked from Juneau to Seattle. They usually camp on the beach.

Hows summer up there? I'd love to do a few weeks/month of camping.

I have taken chunks of time off to pursue things like this. Took a year off to look for gold, and have taken several months off to go across S. AMerica.
Took the whole year off in '09 and went prospecting for the hell of it. One of the places I was looking was near Porcupine Creek where they film some of that "Gold Rush" show
Half the people I know take long leaves of absence to go do stuff like this.

are you independently wealthy?

Depends. Last summer sucked, and was like a perpetual fall.
Most are pretty awesome though and warm days it can be around 80 degrees.

Do you have any state/national parks that one could spend a few weeks In without getting too bored and be close to a store for food and supplies?
