Not at all. I don't have debts (Didn't have a mortgage at that time) and live well below my means. It doesn't take much to pursue things you want to pursue for a period of time if you pan it wisely. It;s a different lifestyle.

I have friends who work for 5 months and travel the rest of the year in places like Thailand, where they can live dirt cheap.

It would be harder for me to do now since I have this damn house, which I will probably downsize soon. It ties me down too much.

In my experience it takes a special king to live in Alaska. Similar to thise who live in the remote parts of the lower 48.

Many do for themselves and can live "off the grid" for a time.

But Roger is just probably independently wealthy.

Who wouldn't make a fortune as a shrubber!

My first wife was like that. We were totally different but married for 16 years. I called her the anchor, she thought it was because she was solid...

First thing I did when I got divorced was set out on a long road trip, then joined up with an Iditarod team for the experience. Worked as a handler for a while. Did a couple winter caretaker jobs as well. I work to live, don't live to work.

Its not that I love my job, I'm just scared to not have a steady one.

Nah, I have started over a few times. It's still the land of opportunity here and getting on your feet and making it is pretty easy compared to many places in the lower 48.

It's expensive, but pay is higher too. What I pay for my house I could literally afford a mansion in many places.

Ahh..doesn't bother me for the most part. Love where I live and will do whatever I can to ensure I can.

My wife and I are considering buying a sailboat and taking off a summer, traveling the inside passage. We both know we could find employment pretty easily when we got back.

Career isn't important to me, affording my lifestyle is important but that isn't very difficult. AK is still the land of opportunity IMO

Did it for the first time when we moved here from La. Had two small kids and it was an amazing adventure. The kids still look at it as one of the highlights of their lives. Neither of us had jobs waiting for us when we got here.

Ran into a lot of folks who did the same thing I did and found it it was pretty normal for the area.

Sometimes I despise my house cause of this. The trailer sucked but it was cheap.

I am looking at a cabin on a few acres on CHilkoot Lake, near Haines, AK to semi retire on in a couple of years.
