Now what do you do when you're in your yak paddling along and you get hit by a damn oak tree?????
Icebergs are as bad, and you can't see what's underwater. Just gotta learn to be observant and steer clear. Them f'kers will roll on you and triple in size above the surface.

I have friends who work for 5 months and travel the rest of the year in places like Thailand, where they can live dirt cheap.
A couple of years ago we befriended a family from Talkeetna that were spending the winter driving the southern US in their VW camper van. They were home schooling their 2 daughters and the life they had chosen and the fact that a family of 4 could live in a van like that was a catalyst for change in our lives. That spring we bought a VW camper van ourselves and hit the road up to Alaska and other parts. Spent 3 months and drove 16,000 miles and had an awesome time. At some point in the next few years we're hoping to sell the house, buy a vehicle more reliable than a VW van (but smaller than a RV) and hit the road until we are tired of it. The people you meet on the road doing the same thing and the people that you meet out in the wilds are some of the greatest people that you will ever spend time with.

Talkeetna people are awesome...
I think Juneau is pretty empty right now with everyone traveling south right now. I have friends who are gone until Mid January.
We are definitely going to get to the point we can travel more in the next couple of years. Downsizing this house will be the fist step since we use about half of it.

Talkeetna people are awesome... Love that little town.
Talkeetna...Yeah, I got drunk as shite there in November of 1989 en route to Fort Wainwright for Arctic Survival school. Reported-in one hell of a buzzed drunk after discovering (and over-dosing) on Irish Coffee at a little bar there in Talkeetna.

I woke up in the big su lodge bar and don't know how the hell I got there. It's outside the access rd to Talkeetna on the Parks.
First time I went to Talkeetna, couple of the local young ladies were bathing au naturale in the river with a view of Denali right behind them. Surreal experience.

Don't think I would want to mess with the barges.
why?
heck my duck boat gives a bigger wake than many barges i have been on the river with, naval architects must have their stuff together amazed how little wake that the have.

barges.
It's the harbor tugs and tractor tugs.
Dem bitches make waves.
Ships don't seem to make big waves, but sometimes when they pass fast enough, they can suck the water out quickly. Hard to explain.

Some ships leave huge waves. It really depends on where you are at, how loaded down they are, and how fast they are going. Some of those suction type waves are very big. They could definitely give a yak some problems. Hell some of them can give my 20ft flatboat a problem.
