What’s the most reliable 270 automatic rifle out these days. Need something that can handle a little mud and water for running dogs.

Thanks

Browning BAR and benelli R3 are the only ones I know of now. Both have good reputations. You could probably find a good deal on a used jam-o-matic at a pawn shop as well.

Brother has a newer BAR in 308 with a fixed 4x28 that is a slick little gun, that’s what I would go with for when the tailgate droppeth and the bullshite stoppeth.

Out of curiosity, why specifically a .270?

Not necessarily a caliber id associate with running dogs so I’m just curious.

Back when I did it, remington pumps in .270 and .30-06 were pretty popular. Dual purpose dog rifle and powerline box stand rifle. Shame those aren't made anymore, they're way more accurate and reliable than they should have been.

I have a BAR 270. That should work for you.

270 and 30-06 were all I knew existed growing up running dogs, it was that or you could put 00 buck in your rabbit gun.

Just because I already have a bolt 270. Use the same ammo rather than a different caliber.

I’m doin my the opposite of you right now.

Been hunting with a 6.5 Grendel on an AR platform, and now look at getting a bolt action rifle

I picked up a Winchester SXR2 in 9.3x62 (A wildly popular everywhere except the US 36 caliber German cartridge. Think a 35 Whelen plus) last year. It’s actually a rebranded Browning manufactured long track wearing a Winchester logo for the US market. Shoots great and has quickly become one of my favorite rifles. Available with a synthetic stock and easy on the budget compared to a BAR.

Not sure exactly what you're doing or how you plan to do it, but those semi auto long action rifles are pretty damn big and heavy. Depending on what you already have, your bolt action might be a better setup.

A used remington 7600 pump would also be an excellent choice. They are damn nice rifles and if you want to shoot fast, those are just as fast to make accurate shots with as any semi auto.

That's what I shoot.

I don't know about water and mud though. Mine is clean and I like it that way.

Last time I went with some guys running dogs I carried a marlin 45-70 lever action. That's the brush cutter, ol' son.

I will confess that shooting a 286gr out of an automatic is very fun. The critters know when it hits them. LOL…

The Europeans use it for everything from deer to boar and stags. In Africa it’s used for everything plains game and a few countries even allow you to legally hunt Cape Buffalo with it due to its potent sectional density and rich history with the German and Dutch migrants as it was designed to fit standard Mauser actions. Here in North America it’s somewhat popular with bear and moose hunters. I don’t see it ever really becoming a big thing here; but, being able to load 232, 286 or 300 grain bullets gives it pretty good versatility.

I have my dads 1984 Remington 7400 in .270. Killed a few deer with it after he passed away, but it has the longest trigger pull. I thought about using it again here and there but definitely need to get that changed.

I vote REM 742 because they make a 10-round clip for it.

You need to Remington 742 Woodsmaster in 30-06 to run dogs.

I have a Benelli R3 in 30-06. It's been a very reliable rifle over the years and have never experienced problems with it and it's jammed on me either. There is a 10 round clip available which makes it pretty neat for high volume hog hunting. The only negative I say is that it is not nearly as accurate as my bolt actions but accurate enough.
