243, 6.5 Grendel and 300 B/O are all great options. All can be had in the Ruger American Gen 2 or even Gen 1 rifles at very reasonable costs. That is what I would buy if I were shopping for an 8 year old and wanting to give him something he can use many years into the future

I just bought a brand new in the box tikka 243 for $550 cash on armslist.com. 243 will shoot flat and has killed millions of deer and you can find ammo everywhere. Don't hesitate.

Definitely look at 350 legend more penetration and less recoil than a .243 with a larger bullet Also legal for primitive season

And in 10 years if they come out with the 350 fury you might not be able to find ammo.

Maybe, but I think the 350 legend gained popularity at the perfect time, so it’s probably going to be here to stay. I heard of multiple people buying 350 legend rifles because they couldn’t ammo for their “primitive” rifle during the great ammo shortage of 2020.
They also did a good job marketing it and made some people think it’s ballistically better than what it is.

What is your budget?
What is the goal just a youth gun for a couple of years or a lifetime gun.
I bought my son a tikka 308 when he was 9 it’s a lifetime gun and him and my daughter both were shooting 308s when they were 8-10yrs old .
Every kid is different but I know several kids that age that were shooting 308s.
243 is a great cartridge and I’m not opposed to it I would just be more thinking of the long game instead of a youth gun. And for all the 6mm and 350 recommendations think long term and if buying bullets at your local academy anytime you want as being important. If it is stay with (243,308,7mm08, 270, 30-06)

And in 10 years my 8 year old will be 18 shooting something different so I’m fine with a $300 rifle getting 10 years of use but I doubt ammo disappears for it

Eta: couple years ago I put a bunch of money into building a 6.5 Grendel on an AR platform and I couldn’t me more pleased. Sub MOA groupings at 100 yards, and essentially zero recoil. If you do your part shooting wise, there is zero need for a bigger caliber as long as you aren’t shooting farther than 300 yds. I’ve yet to have a deer make it farther than 30 yards. The 180 pound 8 point I took earlier this year only made it 15 yards on a 200yd shot.

I bought my son a .243 when he was 8 , it was handed down to my 10 year old daughter this year. It’s a Remington 783 youth model which I threaded the barrel for a suppressor. The light recoil of a.243 is non existent now. She shoots 95gr Hornady SST’s and it puts deer down!

Stay away from the flavor of the month calibers, stick with what is common like .243

Aside from 6.5 creedmoor, agreed.
6.5 creedmoor was the first flavor of the month in a really long time, and rifles sold like hot cakes for a decade, and therefore ammo will likely stay well available.
Id be leery of anything that is subject to the hornady marketing machine. Wait till 6mm GT is the next new thing!!!!

All those are good choices, I got my son a Ruger American and a great scope. The damn thing is accurate enough to be a competition gun. I lent it to a buddy who competes to see if he son liked it and we he brought it back he told me, “Never ever sell this rifle.” when I ask him why he said he was patterning it at 100 yards to make sure it was sighted correctly etc, and hit the center of bullseye first shot but then he completely missed paper next 5. He had the range owner come over and eventually they determined it was going exactly in the same hole so u couldn't see it hit the paper. Said it was just as accurate at 200-300 yards. Said it was as accurate as most of his 10-15000 dollar competition target rifles. Claimed 1 in many 1000s or something from factory just come out perfect like this. Anyway, my son killed a lot of deer with it, some with ridiculous shots, he really should not have taken.
Teach him to shouder shoot not heart shots with .243 and use those fushion like super bullets. He dropped a 215 pound beast at 150 yards like a sack of potatoes with a fushion .243 bullet years ago.

Yeah there's no shame in the .243 game. That round can be nausty.

Absolutely no shame! Federal used to load a 70 grain ballistic tip .243 round ( think it was intended for coyote)? I killed several 90-125 lb does with the ammo and not a one ever took a step after bullet contact. However, I would rather a different style bullet if hunting anything heavier than those does, especially if it wasn’t standing broadside. The 243 Winchester is a great whitetail round!

The big gun baws will crap on a .243 but I still pull mine out occasionally and run 95gr fusions or 100gr American Whitetail…. Inside 250, they are just as dead as if I shot them with my bigger calibers. My daughter is 6 and her first kill will be with my Rem700 .243

I got a .243 for Christmas in 5th grade. I also still take it hunting several times a year. I love that gun. I’m looking to buy another and add a suppressor for my boys who are 7 and 5. Anyone have anymore suggestions on a .243 suppressor combo?

So what did you end up getting?
Also, I love how you ask for tips on where to get a 243 rifle and almost the whole thread immediately turns into a debate on calibers.

I think it really comes down to what style of gun you want.
Bolt gun get a .243
AR style get a 6.5 grendal.
I have a grendal and absolutely love it. Follow up shots are easy and recoil is nothing

My dad got my brother an I a rem 700 in 243 when we were 8 or 9. We killed piles of deer with it. My dad still hunts with it. Does fine. Blood trails can be lacking but we have dogs for that. He usually drops them, though.
