Question in description.

Basically my options are an AR that I run the mentioned round in with a thermal scope that’s sighted in.

OR a 300 BLK pistol with just an Aimpoint on it.

Surely with decent shot placement the former will be fine right? Or is the 300 BLK much better option all way around?

Either have killed plenty.

.300 blk and you’re limited to ~ 100yds

55gr would be fine if you wanted to use them.
ETA: I will say that I believe that Hornady Black are match loads. They’ll kill but won’t retain that much weight.

Those federal fusion .223 bullets are deadly on hogs. Full metal jacket bullets just pass through

If you're actually worried about recovering them, barnes TSX would be a better option. They have a 70something grain 5.56 load as well. If your rifle is 5.56, that's about as good as you can do for killing things with a regular AR15 IMO. I had some and they shoot great.

Don’t about recovery. I care about killing them.

Ah well pretty much anything will work then. I'd use FMJ just so they run off and die somewhere else if you're just exterminating.

I've killed a number of hogs with an AR and 55 gr ammo. I'm sure the 75 gr will be fine.

Another vote for fusions. I can confirm that they are deadly at ranges of less than 150yd, with excellent results.
They are fairly cheap and can be found everywhere for high volume shooting.

federal fusion

This is all I shoot now rifle wise since last year. From AR to my sons 243. I’ve seen a 250 lb hog flop over at 100 yards with the 243 fusion. Never even took a step when son shot him. Other son had same thing on a doe. Flopped right over never moved with another 243 using fusion.

Controlled Chaos
quote:

The bullet is designed to penetrate to a specific depth and to fracture as the internal hydraulic pressure exceeds the hoop strength of the nose design. At the time of fracture, a massive energy spike is released as the particles break away and radiate outward from the initial trajectory path. This energy spike, and resulting temporary cavity, sends a shock wave through the animal's circulatory and nervous systems, immediately shutting down the functioning parts of these systems.

Just about anything is plenty if you hit them in the right spot. They're not indestructible or bullet proof.

Like everyone else said. Need a precise shot for a really big pig to drop him. It will do the trick. Go kill them!
