It depends on the ammo in the AR too. 55gr and 62gr M855 have tenancy to fragment and tumble because of either design or twist-rate. 55gr is overstabilized in 1:7 twist, M855 tends to fragment at the cannelure. Heavier or differently constructed can have way more penetration. M855A1 is 62gr but designed to retain a heavier slug of material to be barrier blind. 75 - 77gr OTM's will probably penetrate more too.

I’ve always been told ( CCP courses) that if you shoot someone who is 20’ or more away from you you open yourself up to more critical criminal and civil action as the “threat” isn’t a threat when that far away. Does anyone know of any actual criminal/civil action to back that up?

Inside of the home defense I prefer a shotgun with high brass six shot or something in 45 acp. The risk of going through walls and sustaining collateral damage is less than 5.56mm. Outside of the home an AR 15 is a very good weapon and comes into its own.

Yes .223 is great for home defense. Many say it’s the all-around best. I’ve read it does indeed have less wall penetration than buckshot and pistol rounds.

Shotgun will certainly do the job too. I have a hard time believing bird shot from a 12 gauge wouldn’t stop an intruder although of course buck shot will.

A pistol is great for home defense. Use hollow point.

Cops use 20’ as the shoot don’t shoot distance because inside of 20’ a guy with a knife will typically be able to stab you if you don’t already have your firearm drawn.

Also AR-15 is excellent choice for home defense.

I’d rather have a Ruger 9mm carbine for home defense, uses Glock magazines.

Indeed. Paul Harrell already did it.
LINK ]Paul Harrell builds walls, then shoots through them and meat targets with both 00 buck and .223 and various other things

The muzzle flash would blind you at night.
If you're indoors, it'll also cause hearing loss if you don't have ear pro or a suppressor (although a suppressor drops you down close to .22 LR territory ballistically).

12ga auto. Plug out. Turkey loads.

Ideally, a tactical format with a larger magazine (ie M4).......AR may be a good defense weapon but it’s no where as effective in home defense.

Man you done did it now.

I use a shotgun because its what I've got, but if I had any shotgun and an AR next to each other, I'd grab the AR every time. Its hard to come up with a situation where the shotgun is the better choice. It's not a bad choice, but its inferior to an AR in every way I can think of except close range one shot horsepower.

Joe Biden told us all to just grab a shotgun

But seriously, bird shot up close will wreck stuff. I've cut water moccasins in half with it and disintegrated parts of them

Agreed. I don’t even like shooting my 12ga. Gives me a headache. I keep it just bc I’m an American and it seems un-American to get rid of a shotgun.

What do navy seals use? That’s what I would use. They seem to do very well in CQ situations.

Did I say buckshot? I clearly didn't specify a specific shotgun load. But if I were, I would say some high brass 2 3/4 bird shot. You really should do more "reading" rather than assuming I'm saying things that I am not.
