Every young person should start with a single shot.
Learning to make that first shot count is critical in hunting and "Spray-And-Pray" is worthless in both hunting and target shooting.
Once the basic restraint and concentration is achieved and firmly ingrained, then a semi-automatic like the 10-22 is a great tool.
Quoted for truth.

My first .22 rifle. Stevens Model 15. Got it after my grandfather died. He bought it at Southdowns Hardware on Perkins Road in 1955. Still have it. Still shoot it. Carlos Hathcock learned to shoot with one of these rifles.

I bought a Ruger American rimfire, Leupold 3-9 rimfire, and Q El Camino last year (~$1K all-in). My son and I both enjoy shooting pretty much anything, so I was thinking this would be a cheaper option to practice scoped rifle shooting. Well this rifle has become my favorite rifle to shoot. Great trigger, whisper quiet, and EXTREMELY accurate. Anyone who has shot it immediately grins and finishes the mag. We shot 600 rounds last Saturday between the bolt gun, 10/22, M&P 15-22 pistol, and the Mark IV pistol. I bet 450 of the rounds went down the bolt gun. It is extremely fun to shoot. My boy and I shooting 100 yard targets with tiny groups listening to 90's country is something I could do until I melt the barrel...Just my opinion. I own three Rugers (10/22, American, Mark IV pistol), Henry lever action 22, M&P 15-22 "pistol", Sears bolt action 22 short, rough rider revolver, no-name tube-fed semi-auto from the 80's, and a savage 93 17 HMR bolt action. Get whatever you think the kid will enjoy more, bc that's what it's about at the end of the day. I would HIGHLY recommend getting one with a threaded barrel and get a suppressor.
An added bonus of the Ruger bolt gun: a guy showed up to shoot his kids rifle which happened to be a Ruger American in 7mm-08, and they feel pretty much identical besides the shorter movement to cycle the action.

This has me looking at the Ruger American bolt action to finally get a suppressor on. I assume you have the 18" threaded barrel? Also, what's a decent price range for a middle of the line suppressor for a 22? I am absolutely clueless with it comes to that

Look at the Q el Camino, dead air mask, or rugged oculus.
I have the el Camino and oculus. I like them both.
They’ll all be $500 +/- $100
Then you need an $200 stamp
And a trust $100-200 if you go that route.
Absolutely, do not buy one with anything aluminum. Huge pain in the arse to clean them.

Stamp yes, $200 every time
A good trust can accept multiple silencer, sbrs, etc. (in other words don’t to the single shot trust from silencer shop).

And attorney can draw one up. It’s not too big of a deal.
But everyone involved will have to submit fingerprints.
I store with a silencer shop kiosk makes it much easier to do it. You can do your fingerprints in the kiosk.
And when you want another silencer, they have the info already and it’s much easier the second time around.

You can also find trusts already formatted online for like $50. Just have to get it notarized. I'm the only name in my trust. So I'm the only fingerprints required. Later can add people to the trust and they don't have to go through the process for everything already in there, but will for anything added in the future. At least that's my understanding.

my first gun was a Remington bolt action 22 purchased in 1962 for about 30 dollars new. Good for short, long and long rifle bullets. I walked for many hours looking for squirrels to shoot. Still in excellent condition for the next 50 years.
2-3 years ago I looked at 22 semi auto rifles. While I do own a great Ruger ranch rifle in 223, Leopol Hog optics, I took a pass on the 10/22 because it had a plastic magazine.
If you want your son to have a heritage rifle to give to his kids, skip the plastic

If you want to get your son a 10/22, I wouldn't worry about its plastic magazine. I've got four 10/22's and an old 77/22 that all use the same magazines. I've never had a problem w/ the hard plastic construction of the 10/22 magazine. A magazine made from metal (are you listening Savage??) isn't necessarily better than a magazine made from plastic. I wish all magazines worked as well as the 10/22 magazine.

Bought the 10/22 carbine for him today. Will try to get to the range tomorrow!

I’ve got 2 now. The trust setup with silencer shop was simple. The wait time was 2 days for one and 2 weeks for the other. The pain in the arse was paying the government $400 bucks to own them.

Got to the range yesterday after picking him up from school. Already ready to put a scope on it. Any suggestions for a rimfire scope? I have an old Nikon Buckmaster 3x9-40 from like 2001. Was going to throw that on there but pulled it out of the safe and remembered just how horrible that thing was. Something that he can grow into and maybe shoot past 100 yards as he gets older without breaking the bank (i.e. sub $400)?

You can get a Leupold Rimfire for less than $300. Add scope mounts, and you're less than $400.

I have a regular Leupold VX Freedom 3-9x40 on one of my 10-22 and I like it a lot. Very clear.
The store didn't have the rimfire when I bought mine so I got the regular one.

A fan of Vortex and their warranty, but also been wanting to get a Leupold. Found the Vortex Diamondback and Leupold on Amazon and will take advantage of their return policy to check them out.
