Same here with the freeze last year. Lost 9 birds. I did hear a couple scouts early Saturday morning here in Lafayette.

I have about 8 spending the night in my houses and gourds. I’m close to LSU. Showed up 2 weeks ago, more than a month later than the past 20 years. Last year’s freeze affecting the arrivals.

We have at least 8 and possibly as many as 15. Have consistently seen 8 for the past week or so, and counted 15 a few days ago at dusk. South of Lake Charles.

Anyone have a very basic/beginner reference for Purple Martin house placement, timing, maintenance, opening/closing, etc.?

I've got a grandkid into birds & would like to get them started with this to where it's something I just "remind" them about while they handle all the duties.

In very general terms, the want to be close to people, but not too close. Water is good. They need free space to approach and leave the house, but mine attracts birds with trees on two sides. They appear in La. anywhere from early February to now, yet mine are still absent. They leave around mid-July. I take my house down(lower it) as soon as they are gone.

Finally got around to putting up my house today and after it was hung up I grabbed some twine to tie it up to keep it from blowing around I had 4 or 5 dove bombing me to chase me off.

Martins under the back deck. Mud wrens on the front porch. Robins have already stalked out each tree and fight over them daily as the leaves begin to bud.

Are you sure they are Martins under your deck and not swallows? Martins typically rely on houses put up by humans.

We had one martin flying around about 10 days ago. Then about 6 days ago, there were 4 flying around.... none landed on my 2 houses. This morning I saw 1 flying around but did not land on house.

I have about 10 sparrows using the martin houses. I might need to lower the houses and clean them out again.

Two showed up at my Martin house today. Probably the latest I have ever seen them where I live

I heard a couple flying high in Lafayette today.

The cold weather has held back oaks and crape myrtles from leafing out.

I suspect the martins are delayed too.

House down the canal has had 4-5 pairs working it for a couple weeks. I’ve seen some flying around the house I put up last week a little bit but no landings yet

Confirmed a male and 2 females on the house this morning. Caught old boy going in to check out the crown molding. Might be in business

Seems I have a female shortage and none of the few are choosing my house but the other 2 options down the road. Plenty of males having dogfights over the neighborhood and a couple hang around my house at some point every day. Is this a thing or am I just crazy?

So, now that they are staging/leaving, I wanted to post an update. While a couple of individuals flew around and even landed on my house, none actually nested this year. Makes me think I lost the traditional families to the ice storm. I will do some more limb clearing in case that was the issue for next Spring.

Do you take your house down or leave it for the damned sparrows?

I seemed to have lost my entire colony. Pisses me off.
